Two weeks ago I asked for permission to hunt groundhogs on a dairy farm just down the road from my place and was given the go ahead. 600 acres of hay and alfalfa. Last Sunday I went out for the first time there and started to check out where the burrows were, found a few and missed one at about 300 yards.....considering winds of about 70kms\hour I wasn't too put off.
Well tonight I went back and as I was driving up to the farm I saw they were about to go work in the fields. I asked if my timeing was bad and the farmers son directed me to more land that they owned About half an hour into the hunt I hear what sounds like a scooter, I look around and here comes the farmers son on a minicross. He asked if I saw any hogs and since the burrows I saw were looking somewhat abandoned he offered to give me the grand tour. Told me to hop on to the back of the bike and he would bring me back to my car.......I'm 6'4'' and weigh 275!! well it seems the minicross was sturdier then I thought but it must have looked like a circus bear on a tricycle! He brought me to my car we went back to the farm and took his pickup through the fields looking for burrows, driving like a bat out of hell through the fields. Spotted many holes that look promising. He brought me back and I thanked him for his time.....I had just met this guy and he took a good hour of his time to help me out. We often discuss the negative encounters we have with others but sometimes we fall apon some great folks. He even offered to ask another farmer if I can access some ajacent land and will let me know as soon as he sees him...
Any others out there with some friendly farmers in their entourage?

I was out hunting on some public land one day (coyote hunting) as I am walking to my car, I notice a truck coming down the road really slow...I figure its going to be some guy giving me a hard time....the truck comes to a stop and the man downs his window and asks me what I hunting for at this time of year (it was mid Jan.) I tell him coyote's....He asks how I am doing, I say okay but no yotes yet....we get to talking, I show him my set up, turns out to be a really nice guy.... out he comes with a map of his place, telling me when I am done here, go give his place a try.... So there are still some good poeple still out there...

I don't know too many farmers that would say no to shooting gophers. All they do is cost the farm money...However, gophers are getting scarce around here, due to predation...

The fellow that owns the pasture where I hunt squeaks is always stopping to say hello and check out the rifles. After I obliterated most of the gopher population last year he dropped off a huge chunk of homemade sausage, 50 ib sack of taters and a huge bag of carrots just to say thanks. And this year there are even more gophers around.

most farmers is good people if you ask permission first and dont make a mess on their land.

you help them getting rid of burrowing pigs and they help you out helping you find them.
its a good you scratch my back il scratch yours.

and a note. if a farmer thinks your a good person. ive got all the time in the world for you. most are very good judges of charictor.

the farmer who owns the place where i do my shooting is a great guy i met him when i moved to alberta and started working in the same shop as him. some of the guys i worked with set up a poker game and he found out i own fire arms and needed a place to shoot he cornered my and started stabbing me in the chest with his finger (it happens to be built like a smokie) and tolk me to get my f'in ass out to his f'in place because he has f'in critters that he doesn't have time to shoot. well that was 3 years ago and i no longer work with him but i am still the only person he lets shoot there

I remember walking up to a house in the early morning on opening day one season, I noticed the light was on so I was hoping someone was awake as it was still dark out. I was behind schedule by almost an hour and wasn't going to make it to the WMA I normally hunt in time for first light. An old man answered the door before I even had a chance to knock.

"You gonna kill them goddamn deer, son?", he shouts.

"I'd sure like to, with you're permission, sir", I reply.

"Good, kill them all. Goddamn deer eating my winter wheat. Bloody pests.", he says.

Ended up buying an extra tag just so I wouldn't disappoint him. Farm-fed deer are TASTY!!! :) A lot of people are just afraid to ask nowadays. The worst they can do is say no. Just thank them for their time and move along (and it's generally bad form to walk up to their door with your rifle in hand!).
