Frist timer...help please.

Hey guys,

First time precision shooter...and pretty much my first time with scopes!!!

For a while now I have been wanting to get/build something that is a bolt action...in .308Win, with a medium - heavy barrel, detachable magazine and BUIS.

I know most people do not like irons but I do and it is a REQUIREMENT for me.

Something like this is pretty much perfect...how would I go about doing this? What rifle should I start with (mostly for the action) and slowly upgrade it to become like the rifles below?

You could call up Mike at BlackOps Precision and have him make you a replica of the one in the picture. He keeps the specs from all the rifles he builds so it wouldn't be a problem. You would have to have one of the importing outfits bring it in the country for you thou.

Mikes rifles are pricey but his attention to detail and the fit and finish of his builds is amazing.
 
These are $5,000+ rifles...I do not want to pay that lol.

Its just the set up...if I can build something LIKE them I am happy...and building/upgrading over time is easier then a large sum payment all at once for me.
 
Those look very nice, with about haft day of work, it can look like anything.
most use Rem700 action, but there are Tikka, Weatherby, winchester, and also the after market rem700 clone, but $5000, that is alot of money for haft day of work.
 
I want a strong and SAFE action...I do not know if all that Remington 700 #### was real or not that happened last year with the rifles going off if the bolt was knocked.

Agreed, but keep in mind that price isn't just for the fit and finish. These are custom actions, krieger barrels, dbm, etc. Also Mike guarantees that his rifles shoot 3/8moa or better (average of 5, 5 shot groups). Thats a pretty impressive guarantee.

Anyways back on track with the OP's question. Seems like something like a Rem 700 SPS 20" or similar would be the way to go. For the rear sight any of the popular lo-pro rear BUIS could be used. The tricky part will be the front sight. You could have the front of the barrel drilled and tapped for a mounting rail similar to how the old 40x were and then install a front flip up sight, having it line up with the back sight on the same vertical plane is the hard part. You might also be able to find something that clamps on also.

If you want something really handy a 16.5" Rem 700 AAC would be worth a look.

Another option and probably the easiest might be to just buy a rifle with iron sights and mount a quick detach scope on it.

Sadly almost NO bolt actions are made with irons (and many now lack that skill set)...there is the Ruger Scout but I am not a fan of the action on Ruger bolt guns.

Sorry the rem 700 design is pretty much one of the strongest and safest 2lug bolt actions ever made (now for all the haters I'm not saying they are the be all end all of actions). All that "the 700 discharges when bumped /knocked/ no reason" sh|t if from all those unknowledgeable people getting into the trigger group and dicking around with it trying to get the trigger pull lighter. I had my stock trigger tuned by a COMPETENT smith and I wouldn't hesitate to wail on a tree with it and bet the firing pin wouldn't drop
 
Have you looked at the Savage Hog Hunter? It comes with iron sights.

On a side note, why are iron sights a "requirement" for you? Not bashing, just curious.
 
If you plan on updating it over time I think the Remington 700 is probably the best bet to go with. You will find more options for upgrading. The Savage is probably next in line for ease and availability of components on the secondary market.
 
There are a few smiths that are familiar with building M24 replicas that could modify for the irons.
As mentioned a Remington SPS tactical with a stock upgrade or a 700 Police, 5R Mil spec cut to the barrel length you want and refinished to your colour choice. Would be a good shooter without the huge investment.
 
Do you want conventional sporting iron sights on the rifle or paramilitary AR type BUIS?
There are various options for sporting irons.
If it is the paramilitary style you are looking for, the rear sight could clamp to a standard scope mounting Pic. rail. An easy way to get a corresponding front sight on, would be to install a clamp on AR gas block with a little rail section on top. Barrel muzzle would have to be turned to suit. Axis of the iron sights would be pretty much the same as that of an optic. At the same time that the front sight base was installed, the muzzle could be threaded for a brake or flash hider.
As far as the rifles pictured are concerned, these seem to be bolt action carbines in synthetic stocks, fitted with detachable magazine systems. Not hard to source these components.

Scopes break or can lose zero...I enjoy the skill and want to keep sharp with shooting irons. I also hunt in some serious thick bush where a scope is not much of a help.

Honestly...I am just after something that is quick and easy to adjust for different loads/ranges...possible without tools needed to do so. I also MAY want them to be fold able so when I am using a scope they will be out of the way.
 
Just have sporting irons added to what ever rifle. If the barrel is slender, a banded front sight avoids drilling holes. Might be necessary to d&t a couple of holes on the rear of the receiver for an aperture sight. Should be possible to mount a scope with the rear sight still in place - or the windage arm could be detached when the scope is on, replaced when the scope is detached.
There are sporting rear sights that clamp to Weaver style mounts.

If I remember correctly the guns at the heart of the controversy were those built before 84 ish. then the trigger group was changed. Then changed again recently to the X-mark trigger. Very cool project. You will have to post some Photos when your done.

You may want to contact Casey at Tactical Ordnance in Newmarket. He is a great gunsmith, has done work for me in the past. His silver solder work is incredible, so if it came down to mounting something on the barrel, he would be the guy I would talk to. Also does a TON of Remington work, if a Remington is in your future.
