Hi all, bear with me. I am new to AR world and still learning. Anyways, my question is that in case I own gas operated AR, it hard to change to piston(as upper), not as kit?

scott it is very hard to tell but I think thats what he means.

Yes changing uppers is lighting fast. I would stick with gas operated tho.

Better off getting a CORE rifle that has this already done for you negating the chance of bolt issues down the road.

Personally I don't see the benifit in piston AR's unless you are going with a very short barrell or plan on doing very rapid and sustained fire. Direct gas is effective for most AR applications and I would reccomend you stay with it if you are new to AR's as piston systems can cause technical issues such as carrier tilt the origional design was not meant to function with a piston. Also Direct imoingement has less percieved recoil and I find more accurate.

thnx guys, that's interesting points and that's why I asked about changing upper, not just as a kit. Gathering all info. As for now, I see benefits form Piston as gas are going away from user and less dirty (as my understanding, can cause malfunctions). However, GI was here for ages.

I don't understand the attraction to piston AR's. DI is effective and has killed WAAAAAYYYYY more bad guys than piston AR's.

So, you know, that seems like a pretty good indication of successful design.

Can you imagine how many more bad guys the AR system would have killed if it had been a piston design instead of a DI? :stirthepot2:

Yeah That!!

I guess Eugene isn't such a nerdy name after all:)

Fight the power, buy a piston! Even though the spikes tactical at questar is a deal I might not be able to say no to when I go for my first AR.

Meh... There are lots of reason to go Piston, just like a good case can be made for DI.

IMHO, one is not "more right" or "better" than another. They both have pros and cons. Which is best for you? Well, you take an honest/logical look at the facts and decide for YOU.

I have same point, it just with limited cash flow, it is hard to own 2 types. And in order to do judgement, it nice to try both to make decision

Disagree, the platform was never designed around a piston system. The piston conversion was a solution for a problem that never existed. I think there's a reason some of the best AR manufacturers in the world don't bother with piston. IMO straight up gas and less moving parts seems more reliable...
