Major and Minor are expressions of POWER FACTOR>

Weight of bullet (grains) X Velocity ( feet per sec) Divided by 1000 is Power factor.

Major and Minor PFs separate people with lighter loads from larger loads by virute of the scoring system.

Example........STD Minor is between 125 and 170 pf while Major is over 170
Great description, but I think this also requires the description of the target;

If you're shooting major and hit the center ring, you get 5 points, the next ring out - 4 the next ring out - 2.

If you shoot minor and shoot the center ring, same score - 5. If you hit the next ring out - only 3 (1 less than Major), the next ring out - 1 (again less).
