This rifle is on the upcoming Wards auction right now, here is the description:

303 British ten shot bolt action, w/ bbl length 15 1/2" [Highly collectible, customized South African carbine. Appears to be professionally modified for mounted police use or similar. Modifications include by not limited to pistol grip with steel backbone and wooden grips, flash hider etc. Includes ten round detachable magazine and Collector's Corner article in International Arms and Militaria Collector magazine issue No. 26 with Gary W. .Dare evaluation with pictures. Most bluing worn leaving natural gray patina. Fixed front and adjustable rear sights. Wooden stock with brass butt plate. Matching serial number on receiver and barrel and rear sight, non-matching serial no. "73644" on bolt, South African Owner Issue mark on top of receiver,


Could it be that our "Expert panel" got it all wrong?

Well it started out as an M1 Garand.
With the amount of material removed from the receiver I would be a little leary of firing it.

Oh jesus, it IS a Garand... I had to put pictures of an unmolested one and that one side by side and go back and forth a bunch of times. Why bubba, why??? It's so much worse than I thought, lol.
 
Apparently the inlay is whale bone.

That's a whaler's gun... Bout the same odds of surviving to retirement in that business as going over the top at Vimy. I'll give the original owner a pass on that one - in a way it's on the same level as trench art.
