I recently got a Schultz and Larson target rifle (I think it's a model 47).
I'm trying to get inserts for the front globe sights. There is a screw that holds the insert in place, and doesn't look like any inserts I've seen before.
Can anyone help me locate replacements (A US site had sights for an m70 that looked identical, and judging by the pictures on that site I thought the insert was included, so I ordered it. Unfortunately the picture was not accurate, and I got it without any inserts at all)

A Schultz and Larsen M47 should look like the rifle shown below. The front globe should be removable. I don't remember the size. Can you remove it and measure the dovetail size? Perhaps another make of front globe for which inserts are available will fit.

What I have is very similar, the stock and trigger is identical but the front sight is different, maybe I have a 49? or the image is a 49? not sure what the difference is.
The dovetail on the front globe seems to be around 12mm at the base (waiting on a battery for my calipers to get an exact measurement).

The best source I've ever found for inserts is Lee Shaver. Take yous out and compare to what he's offering.

Thank you for the suggestion, that was actually the first place I checked. Unfortunately, Lee Shaver doesn't offer inserts that would fit on it

The differences between a 47 and 49 were largely cosmetic and not always easy to identify. The same model may have had slightly different front or even rear sights. As I recall, some had larger globes than others. The availablility of these probably varied as these rifles were produced not long after the war, the aftermath of which was characterized by shortages of all kinds.

If inserts that fit the S&L free rifles (the heavy thumbhole models) can't be found, determine if another make of front globe will fit on your S&L front globe dovetail. It may be worth examining whether the front globe on your rifle is of a different size than the very commonly seen M70 or M77 models (the club rifles with standard stocks, no set trigger, and a slimmer barrel profile).

It's been a few years since I've seen a S&L rifle first hand. Looking at some pictures of the S&L free rifles that have passed through my hands I now see that the front globe attaches laterally to the dovetail instead of in the direction of the barrel itself. I don't know of any other front globes that attach the same way, so my earlier advice seems to be irrelevant. My apologies.

No appolgies needed. It's actually similar to an (some?) m70 sight, though somewhat larger. The base however looks to be identical. There isn't a lot of information out there and you have been a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for your help.
