How important is windage on a front iron sight, also what is the "ideal" height? Specifically on an AR15?

My new toy has a front gas block rail rather than irons, but I still want irons. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth shelling out for a Troy. Or if I should save my pennies and go with a cheaper non-adjustable flip up.

Not sure on height either. Both Fabsports and Questar have a few sights that only appear to differ in their height. Which is normally best, high or low?

I'll be using one of these two rear sights:

If you're running flip up front and rear its best to get a set that match. The lower the better to reduce your offset. Windage on the front sight is something that isn't overly common. Most front sights are elevation only. Windage is adjusted with the rear sight. There is a good chance your rear sight will not remain centred when zeroed. The troy sights are worth the money.

Generall AR15 sights are ONE height (Hk416 and subsequent variants not-withstanding).

Flip rear sights should (depending of course on the manufacture) align with the fixed front sight gas block.

The ARMS #40 on the picture you posted looks like it has some issues at the rear.

Shameless PDW picture - but you see our flip front and rear sight - these are the same height as the M4/M16 front sight place

Hey, what is that 6004 hooked onto? and how come its not draggin his pants down.

The ARMS sights I posted isn't mine, google pic.

An issue I've got is that my gas block rail is lower than my receiver rail. About 6mm of height difference.

I'm kinda leaning towards just ponying up for a set of Troy sights, but I'm still kinda on the fence

The "Gas block mount" fronts are obviously higher. The Troy will sit to low if you use it on the gas block. As far as I know , Troy does not make a gas block version

GG@G , MI, Samson, YHM etc all make both a gas block version and the rail version

Even if I have a railed gas block, I still prefer the sight to sit on the railed forearm

You could always replace your gas block with a gas block / folding front sight like the PRI, ARMS #41
