Front rest for bench shooting?

Hope this is right section for this post. Went to my first bench rest shoot yesterday in Campbell River and had a blast. Met some great people and picked up lots of good info. I was loaned a rifle,(30 BR) all the ammo and even got a free lunch( they know how to hook a guy) We shot at 100, 200 and 300 yards.
I still need some reloading supplies but now realize that I will need a good front rifle rest and better rear bag. I used my friends setup and I can see that without the easy adjustments on the rest it would be a PITA. It was just so easy to adjust the elevation with a turn of the dial. All I own are a front and rear bag.
What is a good quality rest that is not crazy expensive, say $300 range or do I need more? Cheers Roscoe
 
Bench rest is most often shot very quickly, so the quicker your back on target to release a shot the less the wind will effect you. Viper is a fantastic rest, but personally i would go with a SEB NEO or the SEB classic. The coaxial rests are pricy, but you should only need to buy once.

I've used it and it works great. Very stable, and very quick and easy to adjust. better price too.
 
If I could afford it I'd go with the randolph or the jj industries rests, with a tight budget I'd find a used caldwell rock br and buy a shade tree coax top.
 
So, what did you think of the 30BR? I'm thinking of ordering a barrel and would like to hear if you were impressed or not.
 
I have some very good 3 points bench rests for working up homeloads, but for average range and gravel pit shooting, i use my home made shooters box. I keep all my adjustment and shooting tools inside and the 2x6 folds down and is held by a rubber strap.








 
I have a SEB and I love it, but if I did this again I would go with the Viper rest, the SEB is really designed for bench rest, I had to replace my pegs with F-Class feet (made for me by Viper), and my arms are too short to reach the elevation dial on my SEB when I am prone behind the rifle, I have to crawl forward, and the lie back down and see if I moved it enough. I wish I had the 'Mariner Wheel" featured on the Viper at least once every match I shoot :mad:
 
Has anyone tried D.R. Greenlaw front rests?

I'm looking at "B" rest with windage top, or the Sinclair Competition rest....Greenlaw looks like a well made rest

not sure if you want to jump to the dark side with SEB or Viper

Benchrest sounds like a relatively new adventure for you,you'll find there are endless ways to "invest" your dollars.(read get sucked dry)
A good front rest and rear bag is a key element, but may I suggest looking for "previously driven" equipment for the moment. Although rare,from time to time used equipment comes up for sale which may ease the $$$ burden.
Bob's Viper IS a piece of FUNCTIONAL Artwork and the SEB's and Farley's are top shelf,
but see if you can locate used to start out with.
This forum, Canada Benchrest Forum, Benchrest Central,6BR.com, all have EE 's and
looking as well as posting a want add may achieve what you're after.
If not,give Bob a call (Da Viper) and tell him you're a Canadian...He has a soft spot for Canadians.

I am finding out there are lots of things to buy but I really enjoy shooting. No fears a Viper is not in the cards unless I win the loto. I just made an offer on a used one and hope to hear back soon. The used reloading stuff I got recently is nicer than the new stuff I had before and was the same brand, must be pre China?
 
Be a real shooter! No rests. Bipod at the most. Shooting is a art, a skill and a constant lesson. I think rests are like a lazy shooters comfort blanket.

Nahhhh I'm just giving you a hard time haha.

There are some great ones out there. I'd agree on viper, but expensive. Cabelas had some good ones in.

I use an older Farley coaxial top with custom aluminum legs for f-class. Love it and don't plan on going back to a Harris anytime soon. Smooth adjustments, probably the best money I've spent on gear in awhile. Piper.
