I read someone mentioned before that the green fiber insert broken and fell off on on his M&P9 Pro. I thought it could be isolated case but it's happen on my 4 month old "baby" eventually. I called S&W CS 1800 number and was told to call M.D. CHARLTON in BC. Called they and was told that they can't tell me how long time to fix the sight bcz they lost their gun smith recently. :bangHead:

Does anyone know is there another service center can repair my pistol under warranty? What's the normal wait time for repair? Is it hard to install the fiber rod by myself if I can find one? I remember someone mentioned looking for replacement fiber and replace by himself but couldn't find the post now. It would be much appreciated if anyone shed some light here.

Yes, the fiber optic rod.

Okay. This is a super simple DIY repair. Have the service center send you some FO rod. Cut it with something - I use sidecutters- just slightly longer than the sight itself. Slide the piece of rod into the sight. Melt the ends with a lighter just enough to swell the rod to prevent it falling out.

Might as well learn to do it now because FO rod breaks!

Try your local archery shop. They sell fibre optics pieces in different colors and sizes. Cut it to length and heat up the end to melt it a bit to increase the diameter to keep in place. I have replaced many of these on my bow and don’t see why it wouldn't work on your gun. Very cheap repair. Couple of bucks.
I have needed 2 repairs on my m&p and to get service and parts in Canada was a nightmare. Took 6 months to get a trigger bar!

Good luck.

Hey funny you posted this. I had the same problem with my pro. Talked to S&W this morning, they are sending me a whole new front sight under warranty. Let me know if you want the extension and contact info that i used, they were great to deal with, didn't care when I bought the gun or want the serial.

OK, how common is this? I am flip flopping between the Pro and Shadow almost daily..wait..make that hourly... and I thought I had my mind made up

The comments about getting parts/service is giving me angst as well

FO rods break. Doesn't matter what the brand of gun is. If they use a simple drilled sight with melted in rod they will break but they are very easy to repair.

I broke rods many times on my Shadows. Not an issue. Finish the stage and then replace the rod. No biggie.

The only time this could be a real issue is in some guns that use a HiViz type front sight that uses a proprietary sight tube. Might be more of an issue? I don't know as mine has never broke - but I have had them fall off as they are not melted in.

If you have a FO front , get replacement rods and carry a lighter in your gear. I have replaced the rod in mine twice in the last few years.

Come on guys the rods cost less than a phone call. $10. gets you a enough rods to break one every year. As John points out they can break and are easy to replace. If the part that holds the rod in place breaks, and mine did, then it is a whole different kelle of fish. I went with HI-Viz FO front sight. Seems like it is more robust. Just saying....

Take Care

Use the lighter on one end first, then slip it in and heat the other end. I usually do the end I look at, out of the sight and get the best bubble I can. Then I insert it, figure the length I need, pull it out, cut it, put back and while holding the already swelled end, heat the other end up, then press it in a bit with my finger to make it tight. A loose rod will break faster than a solid one.

Dead simple to replace the rod yourself.
Here's a video from Dawson Precision to walk you through it.
Enjoy

X3 Not only do they break and stupid simple to replace, but I change mine over twice a year. I use red on both my Shadow and Kimber during the fall winter, and green for spring and summer, (and no it has nothing to do with fashion! I can see red better during the low light fall winter, and like the bright green in the better light of spring/summer). I get the rods for free from the gun store...they just feel guilty charging me for them after all the $$$ I spend there!
