Frustration.... What Ever Happened To Iron Sights???

Savage Model 10FMC Scout is a compact .308Win bolt action with a detachable magazine, iron sights, a weaver rail mounted forward of the receiver for an intermediate eye relief "scout" scope and factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts on the receiver for a scope in the conventional position. Current production has their AccuTrigger and AccuStock and will probably be over your budget new but a used one might fit the bill.

I have a BLR in .308 for sale.

It's even more difficult to find a stainless/synthetic rifle with iron sights. Seems like a logical match to me, the most rugged / weatherproof construction with back up sights.

I'd like to find a source for a good front sight base in stainless steel. I have a plain barrel Ruger M77 Stainless / boat paddle to which I'd like to add a front sight, and I will use an aperture sight for the rear. Don't want a blued base, want a base to match the barrel. Looked everywhere, no joy. Suggestions?

For a quad/camp gun, I'd be thinking of an old Lee Enfield 303 British. Those have iron sights and work real well.

Yes I wonder how Winchester could afford to put all them Excellent variations of iron sights on their guns from the model 73 onwards? If you bought an original tang site, ladder rear site and globe front from one of them models now you could buy a whole new remlin with that money today. The worst junk iron sites I have seen come on Rossi's. There are threads after threads on IMPROVING Your Rossi. It's kinda sad what your buck buys today.

No problem. Just buy a Sako .. like this model 85 Kodiak:

Ruger No.1's thankfully come in stainless / iron sighted in several iterations, none terribly common mind you, but certainly available.

Ardent - have you checked out how few No.1 models are being made this year? Hardly any! I think each variant is available in only 1 chambering.

Try Brownells for a factory Ruger stainless banded sight base.
They have had them from time to time, they sell out quickly though.
A chromoly base could be coated to fairly closely match the stainless barrel.

What aperature sight do you plan on using?
I have the NECG and really like the way it attaches, sans screws, but it leaves a little to be desired in the sight picture departmant.
I like the XS, but it requires drilling and tapping on the Ruger. It uses a dowel and one screw so it's quick to attach though.

To the OP, if all you are looking for is a reasonably priced bolt action rifle with iron sights for a camp/quad gun, I'd just buy a good LE No.5. It may not be a .308 or 30-06 but a .303 British is pretty close.

An all matching No.5 with original aperture sights can be bought for $375 or less.
