My buddy calls me today. He knows I am an M-14 nut, he knows I work on them, he knows I have quite a bit of knowledge. When he first picked it up I completely disassembled and inspected it with him to make sure everything was OK. Yet he purchases a Promag scope mount for his Armscorp M-14 and calls to ask me to put it on for him.

Drift out the stripper clip guide using the appropriate punch, fit up the scope mount, it seems to fit OK. Start the stripper clip guide mount screw, loosen up the front stabilizing screw, and start the side mount bolt with cam. Got everything lined up and started to tighten the side bolt using the combo tool. Turning in quite nicely it appeared, until it suddenly tore right out of the receiver.

It would appear that the bolt itself was too short and the threads weren't catching properly. Fortunately it doesn't look like it hurt the receiver, only the bolt threads. I suggested he go to the hardware store and buy a Grade 8 bolt just a bit longer than that provided and we could try again.

I sure wish people would ask before spending their money on this stuff.

The reciever is way harder that the bolt, good luck finding that odd ball thread though. When people do not listen to my advise I usually tell them they are on thier own with what ever they went with!

I did, in fact, tell him he was sort of on his own. Nothing was damaged so there wasn't an issue there. He called the mount maker and they are sending him another screw. I suggested he ask if they would take the mount back and spend a little extra on one of the better brands but he is going to wait and see about the new bolt.

I'm not quite understanding why he has to tell you about every part or firearm he purchase.
If its such an issue charge him to work on it then. Otherwise be a good friend and just bug the piss out of him about it when it brakes.

it is his rifle.. let him duct tape a scope on if he so chooses... He will learn eventually. No need to git yer panties in a bunch over it. You are being a great friend by just offering to help.
