No, they were never issued nor used the Johnson 1941 rifle, they only used the Johnson LMG.

1st SSF used M1 Rifles, but they also used more MG's than regular PBI units. Go to your public library and get this book. 'The Devil's Brigade' is a Hollywood name.

Johnson's were used, briefly, by USMC Raiders, but virtually nobody else.

I have also read that the SSF go the Johnson LMG because the Canadian members of the unit were #####ing about how much they missed their Brens and how much better the Bren was than the BAR, so the Johnson was issued as a compromise/consolation prize.
