Fuel prices and hunting plans?

My three year reduced odds for moose draws are up but with this fuel price jump I'm having serious 2nd thoughts about applying for a moose LEH this year.

I might just hunt deer for one or two trips within three or four hours drive of home compared to two days away in Region 6 or 5. Besides, my wife has drastically reduced her red meat consumption. One small portion out of the freezer lasts us two or three days. I still have more than half a blacktail and numerous ducks and geese in the feezer and the supply is not dwindling very fast.

If my buddy still really really wants to go I may agree, but only with his vehicle. I'm not driving mine to Vanderhoof and beyond.

I love moose hunting, but like I said, I'm having reservations. It's not just the money, there are practical reason too. I don't know what I'd do with half a moose.

It is all contingent on getting an LEH draw anyway and despite being back to normal odds, it still might be tough to get drawn.

What about you guys?

If the price of fuel effects your plans...you have my condolences.
I look at it like the fuel mileage on a Ferrari... if you can afford the car...fuel $$$ shouldn't be an issue.
I've got a 'seriously wanging donkey' ... that gets about 12 MPG on a good day. But I can bounce it off trees and laugh...8000 lb winch that is set up to pull a moose onto the deck or forward if recovering vehicles is on the to do list.
It is expensive...but not as expensive as getting my SUV into harms way. Can pay for a lot of Fuel as opposed to a new paint job on the 'Around town Ride'

I hunt at home but the fuel idea can really be applied to any trip these days. It's either a 5 hour drive plus 2 hour ferry ride or 8-9 hour drive around to my cottage. Less gas if I take the ferry but it costs quite a bit now to ride the ferry so you're danged wither way but I will still be going as much as I did last year. I paid an average of $+1.90L this spring, last spring it was an average of $1.36L. Long story short, if the gas prices don't burden you too much financially, take the trip, as long as you'll enjoy yourself.

well I will be looking at less day trips and more setting up a field camp for a few days

I have a few places that are only 150Km trips and made great day trip hunts but if I camp overnight that will reduce fuel consumption significantly.

Only problem is my old bones don't like to sleep on the ground anymore, going to need a good cot and air mattress, heater, etc.....

gas will be around $2.10 a liter by the Victoria Day weekend probably $0.20-$0.30 more expensive at the Marinas

Everything cost more now a days. I hunt out my back door only because I can't find hunting partners to hunt moose . I am afraid that will be one my bucket list will never loose.

I hunt elk and moose on my own all the time. Dont give up on a dream just cause no one will live the dream with you.

Moose hunting doesnt take much gear. If you can come by a decent aluminum pack frame thats all you really need. Goodness one of my buddies hauled his whole bull moose out in 5 gal pails.. if theres a will theres a way.

I don't do the LEH anymore as you probably know but you could always put in around my place. I do know a few moose haunts that the tourist hunters haven't clued into yet..... hard to believe I know hehe.
I know what I would do with 1/2 a moose...... LOLZ

Moose I go for sure, bison not so much anymore… skidoos are not cheap on gas! My truck is pretty good old dodge 2500 Cummins 5.9L I usually get around 12L/100km sometime even down to 10.5!!

As I hunt close to home the cost of fuel doesn’t deter me from hunting, if I had to travel far or deal with the ferry I might change my approach an bit but am lucky with my proximity to home. Last seasons mule deer was shot 15 min from home.

All of my life I saved A LOT of money by not smoking, drinking, taking drugs, gambling or cheating on my wife..............I'll have enough money for fuel this autumn for hunting, and then some.;)

I try to economize on other parts of my life, not hunting. I don't like higher fuel costs, but they won't stop me from doing much. Next week I'l be in Zimbabwe hunting cape buffalo. Fuel wasn't a big part of my decision. It was more like, I've wanted to do this for years, a great relatively "low cost" opportunity came up, I could afford the offer, I'd researched the outfitter previously, and I had the time = Let's go.

Honest post people should look at the cost of fuel and other home expenses going up I fully agree with the OP on this one

Yes indeed. Rabbit hunting trips I was pretty satisfied a brace of bunnies for twenty minute drive to hunting spot. Prefer a minimum of three now to make the turnaround worth my efforts and cost.

Going deer hunting this fall after a long break.

I am spoiled these many years Alberta-Saskcatchewan, but this rising gas prices finally adding some additional pressure.
