Hello all, So would it be Legal? As long as the FPS is under 500? I have an idea for making one (air smith in training) but dont want to break any law's. If it matter's, the caliber would be .177, run off a CO2 tank and barrel would be around 6".( longer if needed) Thank you.:)

If it shot over 500, then you are looking at legal possible jail time, but more likely than not they will just confiscate it, even if it's less than 500. Also I really doubt that you can get a pistol to do over 500 while doing full auto at the same time.

Any device that fires a projectile over 500fps must be registered with the CFC. It's a firearm. Read their rules for the proper definition. If it fires fully auto, it's a prohibited device whether it fires bb's, paintballs, or bullets. Airsoft being the biggest violator has rigs that shoot over 500fps and shoot fully auto. Not only are true airsoft guns prohibited (not the ones in Cabella's or Walmart) but they also are considered firearms. It's a triple hit. As a majority of airsoft owners are not gun owners, they don't really care and always scoff at all the rules. (CBSA and CFC) If you're a gun owner and you own an airsoft gun that fits into this category, you put your legal gun ownership at risk. You're in possession of a prohibited device and you can lose your guns (aka your investment) just for owning a toy. I have this debate with airsoft gun owners all the time. They always try to somehow explain away the law that it's ok for them that their devices are not illegal and they have no worries. They want you to think their hobby is a "real as possible" yet don't want to take responsibility for the fact what they own is illegal. It's like a form of duality thinking.

Right which is why I said jail time because he is talking about an FA, not a regular airgun shooting over 500. Also, no not any device that shoots over 500 fps; it must shoot over 500 fps and must shoot with over 5.7 joules of energy to be considered a firearm.

A quick online calculator shows that a 0.2g projectile at 500 fps is 2 joules, at 600fps, 3 joules. So most airsoft guns would be considered non firearms, it would take some serious upgrades to be able to do 5.7 joules on an airsoft. Also such guns wouldn't be allowed on any airsoft field in canada.

Man ah! I some time's gota shake my head.:agree:

I actuly played (paintball) with a guy the other day that had a full-metal, full-auto M16 airsoft rifle. I actuly thought I was the real thing untill he fired it. Didn't like the idea of it.:onCrack:

Bad, running out of time quickly. I decided to give up trying to do something that looks real and use a simple design of my own. Going to do the next aluminium melt tomorrow.

Yeah in a handgun I'd also call BS making an airsoft gun into a firearm, now a bolt actioned gas powered airsoft rifle, those are easy, just change the gas from Propane/Green Gas to CO2 and a few simply upgrades.

And yeah no one is going to allow a "firearm" onto the airsoft field! (Unless you are in the US) :D

When I used to play my "M4" was running 500fps with .2's and thats the max for any "non-sniper" rifle of all the fields I played at. The highest Ive seen on a rifle at game was 800fps with .2's....
