From what I can understand it is possible to use some of the harder non-toxic shot in older shotguns if the choke is a modified or improved cylinder. My question is at what point in the barrel does the choking process begin.

I have a full choke 30 inch barrel. I could cut a lot off the end before it became a restricted or prohibited gun.

My thought was chop off the end and add an aftermarket choke tube or two. Modified for birds and maybe a rifled one for the four legged animals.

Has anyone tried or considered this idea?

Any gunsmith should be able to re-ream your gun to improved or modified for you at about the same cost as having it cut.

If you want it shorter, get it cut.. but otherwise just get it altered to a wider choke.

just because you have the barrel re-ream means that you can shoot steel out it it some the older guns there barrels will not handle steel have the gunsmith look at it first befor you spend $$$ on it

Barrel choking can start quite early in the barrel or be limited to the last inch.

It would REALLY help to know what gun is being discussed here before offering any suggestions of what to do with it.
