Full choke... slugs?

guys, am new to owning a shotgun, am waiting on delivery of a Mossy 500 w. full choke from EE. Now, are there any sorts of slugs that'll go through a full choke, or am I confined to buckshot (for deer in SW ontario)?

And no, I do not have the budget to just get another barrel... not now at least.

EDIT: Yes, I know this is a dumb question. But I'd rather ask here than at the local gunstore!

Does the gun have removable choke tubes? You could buy an extended rifled choke tube they are almost as good as a fully rifled barrel. If you are going to shoot slugs from a smooth bore the wisdom is a cylinder bore choke. I have an old mod 12 30 " full choke and it throughs foster type slugs into about 5" at 75 yds. For smooth bore shooting, stick with foster type slugs the sabotted style are for rifled barrels of the extended rifled choke tubes.

Challenger slugs are pretty good in full choke guns. Whats EE? Elwood Ep?

If it's a brand new 500 it should use removable chokes. if it does for about $25 you can buy a cyl choke, improved choke, mod etc.

Full chokes are fine with slugs. All smoothbore slugs (truballs, fosters, brennekes, etc) are soft enough to "occlude" (which means they completely cover/fill) the bore. They will not damage your choke, although it will wear at a slightly accellerated rate. Long story short, you'll be fine, blast away ;)

you will generally have poor accuracy shooting slugs through a full choke. If the shotgun has removable chokes, then it is just as simple as buying another choke.

I am assuming you have a fixed choke and not a removable choke tube?
All slugs are made to pass safely through a full choke... your accuracy may not be the best with a full choke but you will not damage or wear your barrel out.
Try various different foster style slugs to see which one works the best...
BUCKSHOT IS FOR VARMINTS ONLY!!!!!!!!

MusicianShooter I also have a Mossberg 500 with a fixed full choke. My barrel is 30 in. and I have no problem with shooting rifled slugs from it. Accuracy can be an issue past certain distances but as long as you practice with the brand of slug you will be using and know there limitations you will be fine.

As BIGREDD mentioned about the buckshot, I would also recommend the slugs over buckshot in any situation for deer.

Good luck

Thanks, Can'O'Nutz and everyone else. Yeah, mine is also an older Mossy 500 w. fixed full choke... so I'll go and try a couple brands of slugs and see how I do. I've never hunted ontario, but have never run into a deer more than 75 yards away.

Really, nobody has ever used oo or SSG buckshot on deer?

People have used buckshot but we want as little meat wastage as possible and some guys have done the buckshot desperation 75 yd shot at dusk on the last day and just really destroyed an animal that they will never find. Slugs, gotta love em its pretty clear if you hit a deer with one. Thats why Im sure 99% use slugs, effective & deadly.

Good look with the Mossy!

Many of the Fish and Game departments want to ban buckshot on deer... and some already have in the States.
Interestingly some states don't allow for rifled slugs..
There has been a lot of talk in the MNR about banning buckshot for big game... this comes from biologists and administraters who actually hunt!

Tests have been done... at the distances where buckshot is effective you could probably hit a deer with a slug with your eyes closed.

The best buckshot made (hevishot) is effective to 40 yards maximum... most lead buckshot is less than half that distance, 20 yards max!

Do yourself a favor... buy slugs and practice.:)

I know my friend's dad uses buckshot for deer. He uses it in areas that aren't open and the shots will be closer. He uses slugs for longer shots.

Some areas here in BC do not allow "single shotgun projectiles". :(

I had no idea things had to be that close.
Good to learn this before the season up.
Thanx for the info. :)

Yeah - calum i did some research into the whole 'buckshot' thing a ways back for that very reason - use in 'shotgun with shot only' areas. At the end of the day, the undisputable answer was "you're better off by miles with a good crossbow".

I get decent accuracy out of my full choke winny with slugs. Good enough for effective ranges anyway.
