Picked up a piece of 3/8" steel today, 8x8". Painted it and set it up on a stand I threw together quickly and headed to the range. I put it at 200 yards and had paper targets at 50.

I had my M305 shorty about .5-1" high at 50 yards and it was hitting the steel at 200. Not only was that awesome, but I was super happy to be putting lead on 8" steel at 200 yards. I hadn't tested this rifle at 200 yards yet. I am admittedly not a marksmen, and I havent spent much time shooting irons in ages. So for my needs, 8" at 200 yards is perfect for a battle rifle.

Unfortunately the steel was too soft and I have a feeling it won't be making it to the range again! Will have to get some harder stuff ordered in.

Not to shabby, not to shabby at all.

For Steel, I think its Called AR-500 and is considered the standard for steel gongs and will stand up to most calibers quite well at and over 200 yards.

I think Ebay sells them for about $30 Plus or minus a few, depending on the size.

Oh the carnage, look at those beautiful craters!
I need to just spend the money and get some steel for the immediate satisfaction! :p

I'm glad you all enjoyed my enjoyment! It was my first time shooting at steel with centerfire. It was awesome. Especially at 200, the feedback is fantastic.

Yes it's the Squamish range and it goes out to 225 on the rifle range. There's also trap, pistol, and archery ranges. Though I'm new to the club and have only used the rifle range. $80, 8 minute drive from home, and I'm always the only person there mid-week. No complaints!

Going to see if the local fabricator here can order me in some AR500. I think he will get a kick out of the plate I bring him now, maybe he'll get a better idea of the power of 7.62 FMJ's.

I shot through the chain once as well, and had to walk down and re-hang my target. I think with these setups it's important to make it modular. As every part is subject to complete failure! Ideally I'd weld the stand as I know the wood is going to be wrecked, but Im not a metal worker. And 2 2x4's was only $3.50. I only hit the frame once when I shot a bit high, and the fmj basically passes right through pretty clean.

And a question

I have read about adjusting the rear sight, here and in the manual. I am struggling to loosen, rotate, and reset it without the sight moving. So I basically have it 5 clocks below the 2 mark, which looks like it should be 50 yards.

But if I am on at 50, and on at 200 and this is my operating range for the rifle than what's the need of adjusting the sight anyways? Between 50-200 I can make minor changes in hold and be on target. Assuming I'm not going for bullseyes, but real life targets like cans and maybe the occasional large animal.

This vid might make understanding the clicks a little better and also please check out the sticky that J996 made. As he has some great points about shooting irons on this rifle.

As for me a 50 meter zero is perfect for any were between 25 to 200. I just use the front post as a guess-to-mate-er for shooting. 25 & 100 cover the blade over the center mass on a 11x8 inch paper and 50 & 200 the bullets should land right on top of the front post. Give or take a little but you will get on what I am saying.

Thank you for the info, much appreciated.

Picked up a scrap 16"x10" piece of 1/2" AR400, so I'm almost ready to play again. Should hold up a little better. I'd love to get some video of it, but I'm afraid to set my camera anywhere near the gong!

If you know a welder get him to run some hard surface rods over the front of the plate one for impact. Its the same rod they use on heavy equipment rock beater hammers will get a whole lot longer out of your metal. If you lived close to me i could of done it for yeah hehe.

I've been looking to get an M14 for a while now so this thread sparks my interest. I'm a little jealous. I'm even more jealous of the fact that i see absolutly no snow in that pic! ;)

Haha. In fact the only reason I was at the range was because there's no snow! Waiting for more so I can go play in the mountains! Though we don't really get much on the ground in Squamish, at least not for long, head up a bit higher and it's pretty deep.

Ok, maybe it wasn't the only reason I was at the range. The M305 shorty is a great gun. Tons of fun and great history (it's American counterpart anyways).
