Hi,
I have a remington 700 receiver (308 bolt face) unused at the moment and, I'm in search of a project to do with it.
I'm all set in precision target rifle so, I'm thinking of something cheap to reload and fun to shoot 100y.
I would maybe try to turn and chamber the barrel myself on my small lathe.
Have any idea?
357 maybe? Don't know if it would fit in 308 bolt face.
Thanks

358win would allow you to use 358cal pistol bullets for cheap plinking while having the option of using heavier rifle bullets for hunting if you wanted to.

You didn't mention if it's a short action or long?

It may be boring because of its popularity, but going 6.5 Creedmoor for a fun precision rifle is tough to beat. Easy to get Lapua brass, easy to get a good barrel, low recoil and good ballistics. Resale value would be good, and you have the option to hunt with the cartridge should you ever decide to.

Following as I have a Savage 111 action with a 30-06 bolt face waiting to be turned into something. I originally thought 6.5x47 Lapua or 30 BR. 35-284 is another interesting one in the list that uses the same bolt face and cheap pistol bullets for 100 yard reduced loads.

7.52x25 carbine.

Boom.

if you also hunt or plan to..... an interesting option might include the .338 federal?
I'm on that very path and am planning an 18 inch barrel with irons sights and optic mount.

If you have a locker full of large calibre or well outfitted hunting and target rifles, you might want to start experimenting. Pistol calibre bullets fired at distances will be a challenge, and if your range is limited to 100-yds, that's going to be your test.

My father had me shooting OO buckshot in a 7.62 when I was a kid. It was fun, and something that taught me about holding a heavy rifle.
