Got my first SKS yesterday (chinese Norico POS...no matching serial numbers) and spent 3 hours cleaning it up! Thanks to everyone on this forum who has posted tips, disassembly/assembly instructions and general info about the SKS. After reading some of the stories of SKS's that suck (won't fire, slam fire, won't cycle and inaccurate) I went back last night and thoroughly checked out my SKS to see if I would have any potential problems. I was finally able to remove the firing pin (Thanks to instructions and tips here) and was glad I took the extra effort to do that beforing firing for the first time. The firing pin was covered in grease and did not move as freely as it should. 2 more hours spent cleaning and then reassembled the gun last night. I have to say, I think the time spent to clean it up the first time paid off. The gun shot beautifully today! All 100 rounds I put through it today fired great with no problems whatsoever. I have to adjust my front sight tho...it shoots 3 - 4 inches to the right at 50 yards. I'll get the front sight adjustment tool mentioned on this forum and give that a try.

I love my SKS and have purchased 2000 rounds of ammo for it which should last me about a month;) :dancingbanana:

Once again, thanks to all the guys on this forum who have posted all the great tip and tricks. :D

Good for you for taking it apart and giving it a proper cleaning and look over. So many people buy SKSes and try to shoot them full of Cosmoline. Then when they missfire or whathave you, they blame it on the fact that it is an SKS.

P.S. Don't let .303carabine (he's a member on here) spoil your fun. He likes to come into every SKS thread and tell people how much he hates them. Ignore him, he doesn't have a clue about the gun.

Very true !!!!! Most of the time it's not the violin but the violinist who is to blame for the awful sound.
I owned 30 SKS rifles over the years and they all performed flawlessly with proper care and undestanding how they function.
This is not uncommon among humans to blame everything else around them for their failures. It's one of the attributes of Homo Sapiens Sapiens!!!!!!

i had the same experience when i fired my sks for the first time last year, nice grouping , cheap and fun. :dancingbanana:

BTW, if you cant find a front adjusting tool on this EE forum then pm me and i will let you know where to get it from the US.

Common but doesn't always affect the rifle. I shot mine for five or six years before I stripped the bolt down. Didn't know any better. I was astounded by the cosmoline packed inside there.

Glad you're enjoying it. They are fun.

so what kind of ammo is giving you these great results?...is it Czech milsurp or commercially available 7.62x39?...if it is milsurp, what is the year of manufacture?...did you not experience one fail-to-fire in all those rounds?

which distributor did you buy the rifle from?

Good to hear you enjoyed it. I still have my brand new SKS I got last week sitting in pieces waiting for my 30cal cleaning kit to come in. Cant wait.

Hi!

Just in case you haven' t tried it, you should take a look in the storage compartment in the buttstock, as these rifles sometimes come with the cleaning kit, even when it isn't advertised. (I've had this with both an M305 and my latest SKS). If the kit is in there, the top cap to the cleaning kit is meant to fit onto the muzzle in order to guide the cleaning rod without scratching against the bore.

Regards,

Frank

Grrr! wish it where not so cold this week -30 C with windchill is too cold to stand outside and plink. I have a nice chinese and yugo sks sitting in the basement waiting to be fire :(

Got the gun from Gun-Mart in Brockville, ON and the Ammo too (yes I know I paid too much for it but I was desperate!).

The Ammo is the czech milsurp (20 rounds in the blue paper boxes). I don't know the year of manufacture (how do I tell?).

Not one FTF out 100 rounds! The only problem I had (if you can call it a problem - more of an operator error) was that the bolt didn't close completly on the last set I loaded and therefore the trigger wouldn't fire (good thing!). I gave the bolt a bump with my hand but it still wouldn't close so I just cycled the bolt, ejected the round and loaded the next one and everything was fine. The round I ejected was loaded by itself afterwards and fired no problem! Guess I didn't get a lemon! :dancingbanana:

And yes, I have checked the butt for the cleaning kit but nothing was there:( (dealer actualy mentioned that cleaning kit was not there before selling it to me)

Yea really though, man I bought 200 rounds of milsurp made in '73 and I had 8 fail to fires.

)

There should be 2 digit number stamped on the rim, like 75 for example, that will tell you the year of production.

we fired 300 round of czech ammo year 71, every round fired on first pull , no FTF.

sks bot from leverarms, it also performed perfectly.

it was one of those days when all the stars lined up.:dancingbanana:

SKS's are inherantly reliable. And by the time you clean the rifle a few times, you'll be able to take it apart in your sleep. Not many other rounds of ammo can be had so cheap. Not many other rifles can you buy such an unlimited amount of after market parts and mods. All in all the best semi-auto bang for the buck. But it can be contageous, they may multiply and eventually may lead to ARitis.
