Fun with my P22 or how to spend a rainy afternoon in the shop

I never liked the fake comp and 5 inch barrel on my p22, but loved shooting it so….

I first decided that the barrel needed to be shorted to the min restricted barrel length. The design of the barrel and sleeve make this a pretty straight forward operation with the tap and dia (8mm x.75) available from most tool supply outfits. After the cut it looked like this.

I had seen a couple of P22s with cans and decided that mine needed a fake one to make use of the threads on the end of the barrel and cause it looked cool. After an hour or so on the lathe it looked like this.

But what I really wanted was functional comp. The slide is quite angular so the set-up took a little bit of time to work out, but the finished product looks so much better that the jewellery that Walter sold the gun with. It also works very well and becomes more effective with higher/hyper velocity ammunition.

I have to say that it turned out as well as I had hoped and was a worthy challenge of my budding machining skills.

On a side note, this is my first post with pics so I hope the links work as intended and apologize for anything I have done incorrectly.

Cheers

Jim

Gun looks great, thanks for sharing the pics!

Now the question is...will you fix mine? lol

Still trying to find someone local that can do it.
Did you call it in to re-register with the shorter length? How does that go?

Getting real tired of looking at the inch and a half of barrel sticking out;

Hey Jim, nice job on the gun. I hate to say this  but those are crappy pictures. You have to learn how to get your camera to focus on the important parts. I'm sure you were closer than your camera could focus for the mode you used.

Maybe you should try the macro selection (the flower selection). In the normal mode your camera can not focus any closer than 2 feet away. (Canon PowerShot S110) I bet your gun (at least the part that you were interested in) was closer than that. In the macro mode your camera's focus range is Wide: 10cm(4 in)-57cm(2 ft), Tele: 27cm(11 in)-57cm(2 ft).

In http://members.shaw.ca/jim_sprang/images/p22/121-2178_IMG.JPG the bottom of the picture is in focus but not the top of the gun. Same as the rest of the pictures. The parts that were close to the camera are out of focus but stuff further away is in focus.

Other than the focus you pictures were fine. And again, nice job on the gun.

Thanks for the feed back. I have maybe 10,000 rounds through it and it has only had a couple of FTFs from one of the original mags. So yes I agree, I'm glad that I got a "good one" as well.

Rudy thanks for the honest feed back on pic quality... thank god I shoot better than I take pictures, I'll try the marco setting for the next project pictures.

Fonix I have not called to re-register yet as I was lucky enough to have picked up a spare barrel and shroud two summers ago in AK and can return the pistol to its original configuration as required. But I believe that it is just a phone call to verify the change and that I have 30 days to pass that information on to the CFC after making the change perminate. If anyone knows more please feel to chime in. I am not comfortable about doing this on a for profit basis so unfortunatly it has to remain a "one of" exercise in machining skills, sorry.

Hi Jim , nice work ,
re the pictures , they are very large
and slowww to load up for us poor
country hicks that have to put up
with slow seed dial up ( But we can
shoot out the shop door:D)
Also , keep the back ground plain as
that also adds to the slowness of the
thing, it took about 2min. for one picture.
Now it only you had a good gun like a
Hi - Standard to work on:p

Sorry about the image size, pics have been resized to help with dial up friendly viewing. As to working on a Hi Standard, it was my understanding that the perfect rim fire pistol required no modification and a conspiracy by amateur gun busters stopped its production.:)
