Fun with the M1A/M14/M305 platform

I have 3 Armalites that cost less combined than either of my most expensive M14's. I like the AR15 but it does not have the appeal to me that the M14 does and they suck to clean. You can find some really nice AR's on the EE for reasonable prices. Of course I don't mount flashlights and lasers on mine.

AR's at 2500-3000 a crack are numerous and awsomes... Just counted that my 6 AR's 3X AR15/ 3X AR-10 all together were an investment just south of 13K... Good quality AR are expensive same as good quality M1A... JP.

I don't understand why, but I really, REALLY enjoy shooting, handling, and tinkering with my M305 (I have 3), moreso than any other rifle or handgun that I have.
Looking into my ammo stores, I just realized that I've gone through over 800 rounds of Norinco bulk in 2 years. I've never shot a rifle (larger than a .22) that much before.

I can't quite put my finger on an explanation for it. I just find it really fun and cool.

Any thoughts?

Hi Oddshot, I can tell you why, and help you with that....it's quite simply because you; A. you live in canada....
And B. because you love rifles...now if you can remember your algebra from your highschool days...
Where the geographical analysis of this equation sums up the undeniable truth to "x", which therefore solves "X"
Whereby X = A + B. Now if you consider the sum of both of these values and put them together, you arrive at the value of "X"..which is A/B....or in layman's terms....well......
Your a "Canadian (A) Gun Nut (B) ;)
Hope this helps man...Now go and throw some more freedom downrange ok?
Mike
PS. Both are really nice rifles, and I've always loved AR's. But I just think M14's are the "Cat's A$$" ! ! ! !

You mean custom AR's? There's a stock Armalite NM on the EE that is unfired for $1400. I'd like to see a "higher end" AR than that which wasn't a custom build. If I didn't have one I'd buy it. Can't say I get real excited about changing stocks, pistol grips and forends. That is unless it's free floated. A few years ago you could get Armalite M15A4T models with a free floated stainless 26" heavy barrel for about $1500 new. Of course it wasn't all Magpulled up.

I'm not talking about some guys pimped out rifle that he'll never sell for half of what he spent. I see many of those on the EE. They keep BTT, BTT over and over. I'm talking about out of the box A2/ A4 models from major manufacturers. They are good quality and reasonably priced.

Just a plain regular KAC SR15 is almost 3300.00 all in... Good stuff cost... JP.

Now the countless hrs of reading and researching to compare the ROI or so to speak in the "do I go with a Springfield Super National Match right away or will a plain-Jane Standard model w/ NM barrel (lets not go too deep in the proverbial bottom $$ bracket) work out just as well with commercial rolled ammo.

In other words, I need to figure out what the $2000 extra of the SNM gets me Vs the Standard in terms of accuracy, built and parts quality, etc. I don't want to end up in having to invest thousands in a Standard only to end up at the same level as a "stock" Super National Match.

This goes without saying that as much as I like the look of a wooden stock, I would be going the route of a synthetic stock such as the Blackfeather or similar.

As they say, only you can decide the value part of the ROI equation but for my money, the Loaded model makes a lot of sense, especially if you're aiming to re-stock and perhaps scope it.

I'm right there with you. There's something magical about the platform for me, it's satisfying on so many levels.

I've tried ARs (high end and low end, custom and stock) but just find them boring. For me they're missing some key intrinsic soulful attribute that M14-pattern rifles seem to have in spades.

Beautiful rifles by the way

I have a Super Match. I shoot it the least. It's a great gun from the trunk to the line but I wouldn't want to pack it all day. If I was going to own 1 M14 based on what I have it would be the JRA. Closest thing to USGI. Good barrel and GI parts. Looks right and feels right. Has the parts to last a long time.

Here's my Super Match , great rifle I love shooting it . I can't tell the difference between it and a NM but for the price I jump on it. You don't have much options for syn stocks so forget about the black feather as it won't accept a heavy barrel. I went with a JAE with no regrets.

M14 platform is a god damned money pit.

I love em and hate em at the same time.

If I could do it all over again, not so sure I would.
