What happens to the shot pattern when one shoots 3" shells out of a 2-3/4" chamber?
Wartch'd my buddy trying to hit a grouse or two today.
I sniffed his java just to be sure the java wuzz java.

I checked the stamping on his Model 12 and then viewed his shells...……………….:rey2

Need to serve up some proper shells and do a pattern test...…………………..:jerkit:

While not exactly recommended and a good way to blow up an old gun like a Model 12, it shouldn't affect the shot pattern. The wad and shot would be compressed coming out of the shell because it can't open fully but things should get sorted out by the time it gets to the choke. Never tried it though or did a pattern test.

I've known several guys who put 3 inch shells through guns with 2 3/4 in chambers, it's not something I'd recommend but so far they all have ten fingers and dead geese to boot!

Oh man, thats not going to end well one day. Sadly, someone else hunting beside them may be the recipient of shrapnel to the face. Do they do this regularly or was it a one off in error?

I believe the folded crimp that holds the shot having no where to go in the shorter chamber now unfolds in the bore or forcing cone creating higher pressure which would also compress the shot almost like a choke before the choke. You can probably get away with this 99 times out of a hundred but that one time could cost you your hand if not more

These are my thoughts on this subject as well.
Going to go wake him up in a couple hours and have a chat with him.
Going to bring some big sheets of cardboard and a felt pen.
Oh, some proper length shells as well.
I'm huntching this shotgun has a bent bawrill as well.

we literately spent 10 min covering this in my PAL. There was great cut away video that showed exactly what you describe.

If you do it repeatedly it weakens the barrel and will eventually blow through the side. The instructor had an example gun, it looked look like a grenade.

Not sure I would ever describe this type of thing as "funny". No matter how it turns out.

Dealing with steel tubes under pressures ranging from 5000 psi to over 13,000 psi in close proximity to my face and hands means I pay attention to this ####. And it takes very little blockage to spike the pressures to barrel blowing levels. I started to pay attention because I primarily shoot vintage shotguns. But the more I have learned the more I don't care when it was made. More modern guns blow on the range than anything else. And 99.9% of the time it is operator error.

Well I guess I should awf typed...……."Awd" then.
Still git me arse skoltitted when yews'in prawper jargunzs……………………...:p

I knew some guys that did it years ago and I haven't hunted with them for a long time but I discovered that my brother in law was doing it about 5 years ago with an 870 and I set him straight on it, he hasn't done it since to my knowledge.

Good choice not to hunt with them. I hate to be that guy who stereotypes people, but something tells me that people who carelessly use 3” shells in a 2.75” gun are probably careless in many other aspects of hunting...or life in general for that matter. I tend to avoid people like that just because the anxiety I would get from worrying about what they are liable to do would drive me nuts

I was given a few boxes of 3.5" steel #2 shells because a guy called a buddy of mine and asked him why his single shot cooey was hard to open after each shot. Buddy drove over and saw he was putting the 3.5" shells thru the gun and forcing it closed. Old guy fired half a box in the old cooey.
Ppl do dumb things
I had the misfortune of hunting with an idiot shooting #2 steel out of a turkey choke. There was a visable ring in the barrel and it forced the rib up. Luckily no birds flew

You know 1963beretta, we were all born pretty much the same way.
Some had great parents that taught their children well.
Others, not so much.
I posted this thread as more of an informative learning lesson to garner some experience from them that know.
From your reply, well not much is to be lernt.

The old gent just didn't know any better and I'm glad I did catch his error.
So I went over and counted his bunch of shells and came home and went thru
my inventory.
Picked out boxes of 2-3/4" shells and ventured back to his place and let him pick
through the bunch.
I added an extra box as his offerings were worth more $$ than mine.

I enjoy this old gents company and he does make me laugh.
Not so much as some folks on here.

Old hounds can learn new tricks given the right …………….:nest:

Be it as it may, I dont stand in anyones way with regards to the friends or hunting parnters they choose to share experiences with. Its great that you were able to set him straight with what he was doing as you probably saved him from something potentially serious. Where I have issues with people is when they cant learn new tricks and I have found that those people tend to share similar traits.

And to clarify, my comment that you quoted was in direct reference to the individuals that Falconflyer spoke about in his comment that I quoted.

And what you say about parents is true. I'll never forget the first time I went hunting with my pops. He handed me a 3" shell and said here, try this out. He knew my gun was a 2.75" gun and gave me the shell as a test to see if I verified what it was I was handed. Well I failed. He stopped me before I chambered the shell and gave me a lesson that I've never forgotten. Now that Im mentoring a young hunter, I used the same test. And as expected, my nephew also failed and he too learned the important lesson. Its no fun watching the hunt instead of participating in it.

What size of shot was he using?

3"...…#2 steel.
We went out today and he did more splendid with lead and 2-3/4 #4's, #5 and trap loads, #8.
I run his ammo thru my A-5 mag and fur cripes sake, my BPS grouped way nicer.
Kinda making me wonder 'bout this full to I/M I had done to it.

Fun blasting cardboard with berdeez's drawn'awn'er.

Your an evil man Sir, Evil I say.
Taken advantage of our newf bretherin, LOL.
Larry G-never a bad idea to Check your barrel and ammunition. ...Make sure the barrel and action are clear of obstructions, and carry only the proper ammunition for your firearm.
