So here is me, second year hunting sittting cross leged on the ground about 20 feet off a streems edge (3' wide 6" deep) and i hear what i think is a deer about 10 yards way on the property line. The line has been cut so its all thick 6-8 feet tall fur trees. So im watching the only gap in the trees (about 6 feet wide) and i have my rifle up and ready to see the deer. Super excited (this would be my first deer ever) as it starts to walk out and its not brown at all and its not tall. It happens to be black and round and bigger then i had expected. Its a black bear. And its 30' away and im sittign cross leged on the ground.

So i stay quite and still, it smells and stops in the opening turns and looks at me snorting while standing up.

To put this more perspective. I have a muzzle loader that the first time i fired it was earlier that day. And i had fired it twice before taking it into the woods and the first time it went click and the second primer did set it off. It is a 550gr miniball with a volume chage of 55gr 777 So a light load for sure

So i have a single shot with a suscess rate of 50% and a bear 30' away from me by my self sitting on the ground about a km in the woods. I deside i dont want to try and take the bear with this rifle. So i back away slowly as the bear sits back down and i move pretty quick back to my car.

It was a surprize for me for sure. I had never though about bear hunting so i have never looked into shot placement and didnt want to mess the shot up and end up fighting thr bear with my gun as a club.

I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago, I was sitting at the base of a large tree when I had a feeling I was being watched.
I slowly got up and turned around to see a black bear peering at me about 20 yards away. For me though, as soon as we made eye contact the bear turned and ran.

We were deer hunting near Baysville (Ont.) at a buddy's place. I'm on the ground with my back to stump and over watching a good run down the slope. I hear hounds baying and I perk up. We didn't run dogs, but the neighbours did so they would often piss us off by disturbing the game on our patch. I hear something big crashing up the slope back of me. From the noise, I was thinking maybe a young moose. Imagine my surprise when a young black went tear-assing behind me heading for the hill top towards his den on the reverse slope. He just did a sideways glance at me on the way past. I counted myself lucky that he was behind me and in a hurry. If he had come right towards me, he probably would have swatted me out of the way; a scenario that I would not have thought would have ended well for me.

Since were telling bear stories here’s mine from just recently, I have access to family private land that sees a ton of pass through animal action. Deer, bear, cougar, elk etc etc. I took my wt buck there late in the nov season last year, my wife’s aunt and uncle are fine with hunting for the most part. They love wild meat but are not cool with bear hunting for some reason, I can respect their views and they respect mine.

I was sitting on their property, I have a trail cam set up in a specific spot. Bit of a pass through and meeting point of a couple we’ll travel game trails, 40y on the nose from my sitting spot. Sitting for a couple hrs waiting to see if a buck shows up and in strolls a black bear, I have a bear tag to boot. Then the in laws pop into my head, damn will they be choked if I shoot a bear there. I sent them a text to verify and as I thought they said they weren’t comfortable with it, so I let it go. Not the way I wanted it to be but it was the right thing to do as they are family, hopefully I’ll run into it across the way on crown land. I’ve caught it on camera a couple times since so it’s around the area, would’ve been a nice meat bear. Not too big, not too small and a nice looking coat.

If you look in the top right corner you’ll see a black spot at the 1 o’clock position, that’s me haha. At least I got a bunch of good pics out of the encounter and it was fun being 40y away from a bear that had no idea I was there. Here’s a pic from the morning earlier of a bunch of young bucks that passed through and hung out for a bit, where the hell was I that morning lol.

The dog and I were out for a mid morning walk the other day. After having a good laugh at the dog being scared by a cow that stood up in front of her in the long grass beside the trail, she's a pitbull but she still had to run behind me to see what had scared her, we continued along the trail. As we came to a dried up creek bed I saw something moving towards us on the other side of the creek. All I could see through the trees and brush was something moving and black and I figured it was another cow coming up the trail. As it came into view, maybe 70 yds away, I saw it was a fairly large black bear. It was moving quite slowly and just gawking around without a care in the world as he continued towards us. The wind was in our favour so I didn't think he would smell us but as the dog and I stood out in the open on our side of the creek I thought he would spot us and take off but that didn't happen. He just kept strolling towards us till he got to the other side of the creek, 15 yds or so which I figured was close enough. I said " Hi there Mr. Bear, what are you doing out here at this time of day?" He let out a loud woof and stood up to see what was talking to him from so close. He stayed that way for a few seconds then dropped and ran back up the trail about 20yds where he then stood up again to try and figure us out. I told him what a lucky bear he was because I am not a bear hunter and he that he was a very fine looking specimen, belly to the ground and a head like a pumpkin made his ears look really small and that he really needed to rethink his strolling strategy. He then took off down the trail but only about 20 more yards before he cut into the thick brush. I kept talking to him as we made our way down the trail past him and he kept us appraised of his position in the thick stuff by woofing, snarling, crunching brush and popping his teeth a bit till we were out of hearing. I was not really worried about him, I didn't see or hear cubs so I figured it was a boar and much more predictable and I had my full stocked Ranch Hand with 6 very hot 45 Colt loads in it in case he got too close.

I was out bear hunting in the spring a few years ago. The area I was in was a very steep valley with lots of avalanche shoots that the grass was real green on. It had been a slow day and the sun was so warm. I had a seat in the sun and passed out for probably 10-15 mins. I woke up and walked about 40 yards back to the truck. When I got there I saw a sow with 2 little cubs just on the opposite side of the road from the truck. I don’t do that anymore now lol.

ButcherBill, most of the people I know that aren't cool with hunting Black Bears don't like that so many Bear hunters only take the hides and maybe the heads, while leaving the meat behind.

I don't kill things anymore, unless I'm going to eat them, put them out of their misery or stop overwhelming damage to property. The creatures we hunt truly are special and we must respect them.

Good story OP. At least you had the presence of mind to realize your position. Bears can go from a sitting position to 20 meters in a heartbeat.
