I am sure this has been debated and discussed many times, in fact I even remeber reading a thread or two on the subject (before I got into reloading) I thinkI even started one.

Please refresh my memory... what projectile do you guys like in a 22-250?

I have been using the 50gr Vmax and it leaves a nice enough hole, I also use the 45gr factory stuff from wally world, seems pretty good but not quite as tight (grouping) as my Vmax.

I am looking for the magic bullet that kills quickly but doesn't leave a gaping exit wound.

Suggestions?

Oh yes, I am using a Tikka T3 lite so I think 55 gr is as heavy as I can go.

Try using a Hornady 55 gr SX. You'll have to reduce the velocity to no more than about 3500 fps, but chances are it will not exit a coyote on most shots.

was kind hoping to keep velocity up for longer range shooting, but nothing wrong with 3500

I think my 50gr Vmax are up around 3700 or so, can't really remember.

You might also try a 40 gr bullet, which would give you the velocity and extra range you are seeking. I haven't shot a lot of coyotes in all honesty, but the bullets that are super fragile seem to work best from my observations.

i wouldnt reccomend a non expanding bullet for any animal. also in some provinces they are illegal, like BC

Has any one tryed barnes' new varmit bullets. they seem very interesting and if they perform as described should be exactly what you are looking for.
personally i use .17 rem and have no issues with large exit holes. and to the suprize of many people 25gr HP have no problem tipping them over at 350 to 400 yrds.

"...What are FMJs like for killing the animal?..." Commercial FMJ's are not the same as military ball. The jackets are much thinner. With a load that is accurate in your rifle, they'll kill a coyote without making a big hole in the hide. Usually with no exit hole. That's what they're made for.
Varmint(not varmit) bullets are made to expand rapidly upon impact. Big holes result.

I have used 180gr match bullets in my 300mag for yotes. A shot through the shoulders put them down on the spot, a shot through the ribs and they ran off like a complete miss but were dead in 100yds. Two small holes.

I've shot Hornady SPSX out of mine they were 55gr bullets one small hole and it was like picking up a sack of jello. I shot some skeets at the range they were at 350yrds and I watched the skeet blow up before even feeling the bang. I pushed them as fast as I could, (3600 fps) with a 1-12 twist. After that they just didn't make it to 100 yrds.

These varmint grenades are supposedly fur friendly and damn, I can't complain about the accuracy!

6 shot group, 100 yds

If we discount the flyer, that's 5 bullets in 2 holes!!!
