Fur friendly load for coyotes with 6cree or 243

Lots of great advice here. Not a fur collector nor a super successful yote killer but I’m still using my beloved groundhog load of a 55 VMax exiting from my .22-250 at 3100 fps. Works for launching earth pigs! My back up coyote rifle is a 6.5 CM and I’m currently ladder testing some loads with the 95 grain VMax and also some 129 grain SST (for deer /bear, but also for errant coyotes while deer hunting) pills!

Peace Be The Journey!

Hornady's vmax is basically made for killing coyotes. I use them in my .243. Can't say favorite load top of my head, but can go downstairs and look if want. Impressive ballistics, anyway.

With that load my 243 is sighted in 4" high at 100 yds. Basically if I can see it and don't screw up I can kill it. (not trying to brag, just saying the bullet/calibre combo is a good fit).

I think Frank's got the formula, as well as the other fellas saying varmint bullets. I wouldn't spend money on pricey monos to go through. Lots of nice, "cheap" varmint bullets available for the .243. On edible game, I think there's nothing wrong with using a deer bullet for limited expansion, but for fur, why sew up an exit hole if you don't have to? Probably the monos wouldn't make a huge hole, but smashing a bone on the way out could get a little messier than you'd like.

Hit a coyote with my 6.5x55, and I had some 100 gr. hollow points factory ammo that I was burning for brass. I think the velocity is somewhere around 3200 fps, and the coyote was only about 90 yards I think. I got a good broadside shot at him, and kind of expected it was going to carry enough energy and enough bullet that it would rip him open. Must have puffed him up a bit if I could have seen it slow motion, but no exit hole.

Kind of the other end of the spectrum, albeit with a somewhat fragile big game bullet, I got one with my 45-70 and 325 gr. FTX factory loads once, and you could pretty much see all the organs in his body on the exit side.

Ok coyote slayers with a 6 creed or 243 which bullet and velocity combo do you use to minimize pelt damage? So far eveything I use puts giant holes in them, puts em down hard but pelt damage is excessive.

Last victim with a 6'' hole

Thanks for the feedback

PS I know theres lot of other cartridges that may be better for this application but a 6creed is what I have. My 223 is now on the naughty list.......

So you have a .223, and instead of asking for a good load for that rifle, you ask for a fur friendly load for 6mm rifles that are not fur friendly?

Work on your .223.

It’s on the naughty list I said that in my post. Cheers

Yeah, on the naughty list because it can't shoot... but if you are asking for 6mm "fur friendly" loads, you could just as easily ask for "accurate" .223 loads and kill two birds with one stone.

Haha I stretched that thing out to 650m with my kids behind it. It’s plenty accurate but thanks for your concerns 👌

I'd hazard a guess that it's on the naughty list because it's one of the new prohibs.

Or maybe he wants a little more punch for long range?
