Disclaimer: As with most 1911 parts, they require some sort of fitting. I won't got into details on fitting/installation 'cause this really isn't a How To manual but more of a mini-review. If folks are interested and time permitting, I could write up a how-to on fitting a 1911 trigger.
I've been sitting on the fence for some time on buying a new magwell for my Springfield 1911. Originally, I was going to order an Ed Brown from Brownells but after shipping and exchange rate, I figured it wasn't worth it. Wanstalls started carrying quite a selection of Fusion parts and with only $10 shipping, I figured I'd give them a try. Oh, I also ordered a K-hole trigger for my SigSauer Target 1911.
Fusion K-Hole Trigger
The Fusion trigger came packed loosely in a clamshell package along with the overtravel screw and allen wrench. As a result, the trigger's finish was a little marred up which was a little disappointing.
Out of the box, the trigger could slide in all the way with just a little bit of rubbing on the frame and only required a light bit of fitting to get it perfect. The trigger bow had sharp edges and needed to be dehorned.
After adjusting and fine tuning the trigger bow, I polished it to a mirror finish. The overtravel screw, once installed in the trigger, was pretty loose, as in you can wiggle it around. It was too loose for my liking so I carefully crimped it using my bench vise. I made sure to use Loctite on it to prevent it from walking.
A quick touch-up on the trigger shoe with a steel brush mounted in a Dremel make it looking somewhat new again.
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5/10 in finish and quality.
Fusion Magwell and Mainspring Housing
The Fusion magwell is a two piece combo which includes a mainspring housing. The two are connected via dovetail groove and locked together with an allen cap screw. They're made from CNC milled stainless steel bar-stock and available in black nitride or matte stainless steel or polished stainless finish. The MSH comes textured in checkered, chain-link or smooth. There are no chatter marks or scuffs and the finish on mine was a nice even, dark black.
Installation was a simple drop-in replacement. You will need to salvage your old mainspring housing parts as none are provided in this kit.
I've seen some pics on the internet where there was hardly and metal on the magwell to allow for blending. That wasn't the case for me. It looked almost identical to other magwells I currently own.
Dlask brand magwell on the left, Fusion magwell on the right. They're pretty much identical.
I'll need to swap out the grips on my Springfield to one with a square cut bottom or close to being square cut.
Overall, I'd give this a solid 9/10. I knocked off a point for the spring hole in the MSH being a little rough from the nitride finish but that's nit-picking.
