Hey fellow gunnies!

Im looking for some feedback on a decision Im planning this spring. Im looking at trying my luck with using my reticle for my elevation and windage, so the christmas tree ret is required. This will be my first time for this as I dial for everything now with a SFP scope right now. Also looking to learn how to range with the reticle as well, if that matters in this decision.

Right now I have my eyez on the Athlon Ares BTR. It seems to have all that I need for a decent price. Wise choice? Is there any other options that I should be looking at? Is the Ares ETR worth the extra monies?

What are you looking to do with it? Strictly target shooting or hunting as well? Also what rifle would it be going on and what is your price range?
 
Check out vortex Diamondback Tactical on YouTube. What ever model you choose make sure it will have enough elevation adjustment to do what you want. FFP will suck as a hunting scope. The reticle is too fine for low light conditions unless its illuminated.

I'll respectfully disagree that FFP will suck as a hunting scope. I feel it depends what you're hunting and what power you prefer to hunt on. FFP is very nice for hunting because your elevation and windage holds are the exact same in the reticle regardless of what power you are on.
 
It will be mostly for shooting steel, but I dont think that really matters as a target is a target and pretty much all my hunting is coyotes which is always fricken cold out and I dont trust turrets 100% in the cold, when they are needed.

I'd go FFP then. I run my gun for steel targets and coyotes. Just last week I was out calling coyotes and one popped up at 260 yards. Didn't have time to dial elevation so I held 0.7 mils and shot. After that one was hit, another coyote ran out further away, ranged at 380, held 1.7 mils on the reticle and hit him too.

Think I was on something like 13x. The reticle is always right with FFP. If I had to hold 1.7 mil on a SFP reticle that wasn't on the correct power to work, it would have been a complete guess where to hold.

I'm probably not explaining this great, but I just find FFP much easier to use for steel and coyotes.
 
Have a look at the Athlon Midas TAC 6-24 with new Xmas tree reticle. on my facebook page with details on Athlon site.

They really got all the things you want and none of the extras that add costs. I am really impressed with the scope and will be using it this season on one or more rifles... and it costs less then the Ares BTR.

Really like the Ares BTR... did a great job for me in 2018 with 2 podium finishes...

If the budget allows and you want ED glass, the Ares ETR is a gem. If you have a larger budget, then more options so....

Yeah I saw that on your FB yesterday.

Im guessing that its pretty much the same glass in the Tac and BTR?

I do have an S111 right now and Im really liking the center dot of the LRMOA that it has. I see the new Tac has something very similar.

This scope will be going an a 223 that Im replacing so I can play around with positional shooting and on, over through different obstacles that Im planing to do this summer for fun. :)
 
Glass between the M TAC and A BTR are similar. I am going to lean on the m tac as slightly better. It is right there with the Sightron STAC family and a hint behind SIII

for the money and features, the M TAC does a really good job. If you prefer the extra bells and whistles on the Ares BTR, go for it... I rarely ever use all the options and like and layout of the M Tac. I like the new turret style on the M TAC better.

eenie meenie. For PRL practise, all of these Athlon optics will work very very well. I will use the mag range as 10X to 16X and here, the glass is at its best in the M TAC. drops off slightly at full mag.
