Gday fellas, hope you Enjoyed the Arnhem Land Safari photos from the NT....
Coincidences happen and looks like my Sister is spending 6-8 months in Malawi South Africa doin some thing or another... You know what that means....... Im going to South Africa!! The whole Family is, an I want to take my Dad on a Safari.

It wont happen until end of next year or later as she heads off in June-ish 2015, So a lot of time to Save the Pennys.

Im not normally one for Canned hunts or Payin Trophy an Guiding Fees but there is No choice on this one... So be it!

Im not wanting to shoot a heard of Animals, really only want to do some research and pick preferably, 1 or 2 animals , because as you know the Fees will be high, including getting them back home to Aus etc.

Is that possible?

Obviously the Canned hunts in Game Parks would be cheaper?

Is some parts of SA cheaper than Others? is Malawi good for hunting?

I've seen a few threads about SA hunting an will visit them an do some reading, aswell as Google and Emailing Outfits in due time. I guess a lot of Questions will be directed at them, in terms of what can we package together for Father Son hunts, an maybe take a cheap option where we take a few Animals only in a few days.

Anything to look out for? etc

Im guessing the Common game like Gazelle and impala might be cheaper options also?

Im beginning to Enjoy this World Wide Trophy Hunting Game!

Thanks a lot for any info

WL

Avoid at all costs Sandhurst Safari's. They will tell you anything you want to hear in order to get your money.
Impala and Gazelle are fairly cheap. Maybe look at a cull hunt as well, that way you get to shoot lots at small cost.
If time permits make sure to take in Victoria Falls, the Zimbabwe side has a place called the Safari Lodge, fantastic!
The helo ride on the Zabia side is well worth the $$.

Are you sure it's Malawi? That's a skinny little country in between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

There is good hunting to be had in RSA but it will almost certainly be behind wire. How big an area depends on the operator but they vary from very small to enormous. The joke is that any farmer with a half an acre and a duiker is a PH so you will definitely want to do your due diligence. I would start by checking out the PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) website at www.phasa.co.za/and visiting their members via the links on the members drop down.

Have you considered Namibia as an option? Rates are equal or better than RSA, the country is very hunter friendly, and most of the operations are not "high fenced" which gets around the put & take, canned or zoo feeling that RSA hunts often have.

I havnt considered anywhere else at the moment but if it was within reasonable distance for a reasonable saving over a Malawi hunt then I would consider it.

I see google tends to say hunting has only just recently been re opened in Malawi so im guessing the prices may be a little higher than some other areas close by.

Is it possible to do like 2 days hunts? So we can basically shoot a Impala an Blesbok say then call it an experience? Would this more be a scenario for a Canned hunt? possibly wouldn't mind a Canned hunt as long as I cant see from one side to the other of the property...

would be borrowing the rifle, So got to add up some Fees, including the Obvserver fees for my Mother to come also :) it may be a family affair, So this throws out the "great white hunter" safari that say Ardent would prefer, but I surely don't want to go through a few Paddocks an have 35 species of Antelope/plains game standing there looking at the truck :)

Ive been PM'd some info by a member an welcome anyone with experience of a reasonable budget hunt or outfitter reccomendations

Thank you

WL

Why not wait until you are actually " In-country" before committing to any particular outfitter? Maybe you'll meet a farmer/land owner who can let you hunt his land and even loan you a rifle. An SA buddy of mine said that is a way to go. Cheaper and no hassle's about travelling with firearms.

Geezus, So many outfitters!!! Realizing it wont be cheap but that is the key word here... will bump this thread each month in hope to get more feelers out there.

Thanks

IT IS ILLEGAL!!!

Your SA Buddy is going to drop you in the s@#t when the police arrest you...

No trophy will be exportable without a PH or Hunting Outfitters signature...

Not all farms in RSA is 10ha /'canned hunts' with one duiker on it...!!! We actually have farms for Plains Game hunts from 600ha to 15 000ha+ and DG hunts between 2500ha to 35 000ha+, i would like to see you do a big farm walking and stalking...that is always the best to see foreigners trying to be 'rambo'...

Yes, it is possible to shoot 1 / 2 animals.

"...Canned hunts in Game Parks..." - really!!! It is illegal to hunt in any game Park.

Theres is cheaper area's in RSA than other area's. The Eastern Cape is one of them, but travelling is between 3-5 hours to the nearest hunting area. From Johannesburg International, probably 1.5-2 hours you will able to find and Outfitter.

Malawi? You must be joking, no animals left with all the poaching going on there!!!

US30-US200 range:
Baboon
Jackal
Monkey

In the US250-US550 range:
Impala
Springbuck common
Blesbuck
Warthog
Wild boar
Duiker common
Steenbuck
Female culling

US700-US1200 range:

First 3 rules when booking with an Outfitter:
1. Check references
2. Check references
3. Check references

and yes, check their licenses...

BTW if you Read im visiting a Sibling in Malawi... So obviously it would be nice to not have to Travel 29 hours to Umdende Safari outfit........ but i'l be landing in Jburg so would potentially hunt En route to Malawi, or catch a plane to somewhere else with reasonably priced hunts.

Unfortunatly the Grape vine doesn't Reach down here from South Africa so its a bit hard to know about whos poaching on what continent.

Not many Aussies on the forums I visit have hunted SA, so im reaching out to the Canadian lads who have to share info an recommend outfitters... thought that was pretty obvious

Take Bushwack's advice. There is plenty very well organized outfitters around. Some close (1 to 3 hours) to JHB as well.

Using a PH's rifle is no problem. As long as it's done under his direct supervision.

Another note: The phrase 'canned hunting' is highly frowned upon here in South Africa. I would advise not to use it again. Any outfitter worthy of his job (and license) would not practise this anyway.

All the best with your planning! I hope you have a great trip!

All good cheers for the input, I call a Spade a Spade and compared to What I do down under its not free range hunting. Albeit I know that when I get into some hunting over there the best option for me to get a Representative trophy for reminders sake of the time a Sibling lived in SA for a while an the family trip that occurred.

But do take Advice well an don't expect to be using my Aussie lingo whilst talking to PH an outfitters trying to line up the right hunt.

You guys from SA, id of thought would of dropped a few outfitters worth emailing an poking questions toward....

WhelanLad,

Now let me start over...my apologies for anything that offended you!!

I will make Johannesburg International your fly in and fly out airport. Hunting can be arrange within 1-3 hours from OR Thambo airport. Depending what you are willing to pay and what type of trophies you are going to export (shoulder mounts / skull mounts / skins ect). All this add up to an account, which can be expensive...Impala / Warthog / Blesbuck / Blue Wildebeest / Black Wildebeest / Duiker / Steenbok / Kudu / Red Hartebeest / Zebra are the majority of animals harvested on 1st timer / 1st blood hunts!!

To harvest 2 of the above species will be good and 3-4 full day hunting are required. Sometimes luck is on our side and you may harvest 2-3 species in one day, but End of August is ending of hunting season for some farmers. Others have exemption and hunt throughout the year starting roughly from Mid-March to End October thereafter it become quite hot.

I myself are hunting Buffalo from 27 October to 10 November 2014 in heat of 40 Degrees C with humidity of 95%. Then my off season starts and begin in March again.

Local hunters normally hunt during the open hunting season starting from May to end August. They hunt these time for the 'biltong' / jerky they make...it is our Winter time and much cooler to do so.

The majority of foreign hunters do like shoulder mount trophies, but a lot do like the European skull mount trophies. Hunters something also take the skin of the animals harvested.

I can assure you that Malawi doesn't have much left unless it is on private land again (like SA) and trying to introduce the poached-out species. As far as my knowledge nothing goes on in Malawi, only around lake Malawi things are happening with tourism!!

All business has its bad apples, but the majority of Outfitters are reputable and in business for a long, long time. PHASA (Professional Hunters Asso. of South Africa) does have excellent references on Outfitters, but a lot of Reputable Outfitters doesn't belong to the organisation for various reasons...

DON'T try to hunt in any game Reserves or without an PH on any farm even if you know the farmer - this is Illegal in RSA

Methods of hunting in RSA: Walk and stalk, drive and stalk or in some areas shooting from a truck is allowed. The latter is normally practice in very large areas and open, no bush areas. Species like Red Hartbeest, Gemsbuck, Springbuck, Zebra are endemic to these areas. Like the Kalahari / Northen Cape / Eastern Cape / Free State provinces of SA - Farms can start at 5000ha to 30 000ha and sometimes a truck is used to harvest animals.

1. Start by selecting a few outfitters
2. Ask for quotes
3. Ask for an agreement stating all pro's and con's, what to expect and not to expect, if 'backup' shots from the PH is required or not ect - If interested i can forward you my organisations contract that all hunters sign before they book a safari with me. At the end of the day the hunter will know exactly where you stand...forward me your email address!!!
4. Ask for references
5. Ask to see his valid PH and Outfitter licenses
