Kind of a mish mash of topics in regards to the FX9 and the Bolt Catch/Release.
1. So one of my pet peeves with this gun is the ever so light bolt catch spring. Mine goes off with just a wind directional change. Others have reported similar things with just putting the gun down (not on the left side but the right side) and the bolt release goes off by itself. You can move the gun and it goes off. You can insert a mag and before the mag seats, it goes off.
So I took the thing apart and cleaned it - no change. For those who are going to take it apart, be careful with one little metal piece. It is so very small and thin, it's can get lost - and to the untrained eye it looks like a broken off piece from something else.. I think it's the magazine stop but it's important to note the orientation before putting things back together. Anyway, once I had it back together after cleaning it, no change. Still light spring. So I figured there is no aftermarket spring so I just took the spring out, stretched it quite a bit and put it behind the bolt stop switch. That seemed to improve things SIGNIFICANTLY and I haven't yet see the bolt release go off except when I press it.
2. The last round bolt hold open has never been great with Glock 17 mags. I'd say it doesn't hold open 95% of the time, and I may just be imagining the remaining 5%. I wanted to see what was up with this so I separated the upper and lower so I can see the mag insertion. I had Pro Mags, PMAGS (GL9 I think) and Glock 17 mags (G4/G5). Without fail, every single PMAG/Pro Mag I inserted and seated (empty) - when I pressed on the bolt catch, with the mag in there, the release switch was springy - I pressed on it and it returned back due to the srping.
I then used a bunch of Glock 17 G4/G5 (both used and new). Seated that and then pressed down on the bolt catch button. I saw it pushing down on the follower but the bolt catch would not re-spring back out. It was like it was stuck on the follower and only when I pulled the bolt catch button out did it engage come back but not spring back.
I saw that the bolt catch rod or whatever it's called is pressing down on the corner of the follower. So I decided to take the mags out and manually press down with my finger on that same corner. All the followers for the Promags and PMAGs pressed down and sprung up fine. All the Glocks, whether used or new - it seemed like the follower has a slightly rough travel path - I can feel a non smooth follower travel inside the mag. Now, 3 of these were brand new Glock mags, so it's not like they were used, but they all had the same feel (which may be normal, but the PMAGs/Pro Mags were smoother). That, I suspect is what is causing the last round bolt hold open from working properly. Why this is, I don't know. Of course, this could also be the spring tension not being as strong on the bolt catch from the factory and the PMAGs/ProMags are just more forgiving in this regard.
