Hi guys, I know some of you love the GEW 88. I saw an awesome one in really beauty condition!!! All matching numbers and bore is spectacular. IN original 43. Its available at the Wolf's Den in Ivy (Ontario) if you want to see it/but it! I would but too rich for my condition right now.
Cheers

Sounds yummy, but it does leave us with the little problem that the Gew. 88. also known as the Commission Rifle or the IG 1888..... was built originally to take the 7.9x57 cartridge.

Did she look like this (images borrowed from google) ?

They are BOTH beautifully made, likely the high point of 19th Century military gunmaking.

Things have gone downhill a LONNNNG way since then! Plastic and stamped sheet-metal works okay, but it definitely lacks CLASS.

These have CLASS. Even beaten, Bubba'd and broken..... it shows through! Bringing one BACK can be an immensely rewarding experience.

For my money, the last military rifles with THIS amount of care and craftsmanship in them had to have been the Mark III Rosses made in Canada.... followed by the 1935 series of Mausers for Brazil.

Just my opinion.

It is so true. Mauser 1871, 1871/84, Gew 1888, Kropatschek M1886 - those are outstanding pieces. Such a CLASS for a mass produced guns! Can't find it in later guns.
