Hey gents,

I cheaped out when I bought my Glock 17 gen 4 back in the day thinking mos wasn't important.

I am hoping for some advice on changing the slide to accommodate an optic.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Black Box Customs would be a direct mill option but would limit you to a optic footprint. There are some dovetail mounting plates for things like the RMR etc. Those would keep you future proofish.

There was also a solution called the AOS system by agency arms and I believe black box did mill those as well which would open up the door to whatever AOS plate you could get your hands on.

I would order an optic cut slide from Brownells in the US, they are unbelievably affordable, and easy to order. Pick up an upper parts kit with it , grab yourself a spare barrel in Canada and you have a complete second slide. I personally love being able to throw my original slide with irons on when I feel like it or run the optic slide. Brownells slides are very well built. They come with the RMR cut so a Holosun red dot works on them. The idiots at the Border sometimes take a while to let them thru, but I’ve never waited more than a month or so before they arrive.

As mentioned, the cheapest option might be a new slide, and the more-expensive option is custom milling and refinishing at Black Box Customs. The benefit of a new slide is that it'll (probably) cost you less. The benefit of custom milling is that you can expect to get a lower mount and a better fit, but it will cost more, especially if you elect to have your slide refinished.

Two options.
Send the slide off to Tacord or Blackbox Customs. Their costs ($200-300) are minimal compared to purchasing a complete slide and the parts to complete it.

Purchase an aftermarket slide already cut and the parts to complete it ($300-$$$$). The advantage being you can swap the slides out to go back to irons without losing your zero.

Yeah, sure, whatever you say.

Brownell's is by far the cheapest option if you use one of their budget slides and re-use the internals and barrel from your OEM slide.
My G48 slide was $160. Custom milling and Cerecoat work from a reputable outfit in Canada can't touch that price.
You can spend more on some of the other 'custom' slides they sell, but you don't need to.

Yeah, sure, whatever you say.

I do say,

Tacord will mill your slide for $195 + shipping. BBC is $150 milling. $150 cerkote + shipping

A brownells Slide is $200usd+ shipping so $250 CAD
G17 Parts kit $120 CAD
G17 Barrel $170 CAD

Even if you manage to get the slide landed for $200 you are just shy of $500 CAD

Tactical Ordnance is the way to go if you're in Toronto. I've had several slides cut there, and they do excellent work. If you're a first responder, you may get a little bit of a discount as well.

Brownell's #078200003
RMR Black G17 stainless nitride slide with front serrations and window cut = $149.99. Some slides are as low as $90.
The barrel and parts costs: Strip your existing slide for all of the parts doesn't cost a dime, but if one does decide to get new internals, it is unlikely to be more cost effective than buying from Brownells.

Anyone trying to sell the story that home grown custom milling and refinishing is on par cost wise is out to lunch.

In your race to the bottom where your lunch is... you aren't mentioning a few things.

Those are all Gen 3 slides. The OP asked about a Gen4. And while a 3 slide will fit a 4, and will probably function there is a gap in the front, which the OP may not find desirable. Yes there are plugs you can buy, but that adds cost.

Cheapest Gen 4 slide Brownells currently carries is $450USD.

But lets play the game again... only my lunch is on the table.

Even with their current promo, the cheapest slide and adapter comes up to $142USD. With another $35 for the cheapest shipping. Total $176.07 USD

Current Exchange rate is $1.36 + whatever fees your bank/CC hits you with for a foreign transaction/exchange fees.

Even just with the base exchange rate that's $240 CAD, which is THE SAME price or higher than shipping it off in Canada.

Even if you get one of these mythical $99 slides and save a few bucks... risk of customs holding it or charging you import fees.

Plus you support a local Canadian business.

The OP is free to do what he/she wants with his/her money but lets paint an accurate picture of the cost and details shall we?

Lunch is on me.

I like you.

Custom work cost me less then a new slide BTW...

What? Like you did with this post below?
The one where you include in the costs a parts kit and new barrel for a slide when you could easily factor in the cost of using the existing parts from one's existing slide? Items that are used whether one is buying a new slide or working over their existing slide?

I'm not sure what the hell you are referring to with this 'race to the bottom where your lunch is' nonsense, but a number of people are simply pointing out there are cheaper options to custom work. Not only are you obstinate enough to refute this simple fact over the course of this thread., but you are hypocritically claiming I'm stacking my argument by leaving out important facts.

Gen 3/4 work just fine together. OP is looking for options for a slide with an optic cut to run a MRDS. I didn't realize you were metering out the particulars of what the OP would find acceptable for use.

You're being willfully ignorant of the facts.

Clearly there are many options, from cost effective to spendy, that one could choose by going with a purchase of a new slide through Brownell's or another vendor.
That wasn't the point I and another in this thread were making. Comparing one to one or 'apples to apples' is going to be somewhat difficult, but it is not impossible.

Once again, I simply pointed out that there are clearly cheaper options to custom work, and used but one example of a slide that is $150 US.
Tax and shipping it comes to ~$250 cad.
Ignoring the fact it comes with front cocking serrations and a top lightening window that would cost additional service fees with someone like BB to the tune of $100 for front serrations and $80 for the lightening cut,
BB will charge $170 for pocket type milling and $150 for cerakote finishing (it's on their website).

So if someone wanted to get their slide milled and refinished, it is $320 before tax and shipping through Black Box Customs. (assuming they didn't want to use their pistol half in the white).
Wait times on custom v. Customs is a wash in my mind as both are going to be at the whim of chance.
I waited around a month and a half for my Brownell's order and I'm currently over 2 1/2 months with my G21 getting worked over by BBC

$250 (new slide) compared to $320+ (custom work)
$250 (new slide) compared to $500+ (custom work including accounting for the serrations and window).
And one obviously still retains their original slide, and there are still other potentially cheaper options.

As someone who has experience with multiple Brownells slides and has had optic milling work done by BBC, either option is fine.

One thing to note with the Brownells slides is if you get the RMR cut slide, they have the Zev style posts for screws which will limit your RMR-footprint optics to open emitter red dots unless you have those posts removed and then have the slide re-tapped to accommodate closed emitter optics. Brownells also seems to have good deals on their slides regularly ($99 for a stripped slide as mentioned previously).

This is the best option, by far. And if you use the code "HG15" you can get 15% off the brownells glock slides right now... G17 RMR cut slides are $119 usd.

I've done both routes. Had Tacord do an RMR cut on a factory Gen3 slide, and I've also purchased an optic ready Gen3 slide from Brownells.

I'll say this: its nice to have spares. If the cost is in the same ballpark, it makes way more sense to buy a second slide. From a function and quality standpoint, the Brownells slides seem like excellent value. Mine has been great.
