Hey guys! I just got my restricted firearms licence yesterday and went in to my local firearms dealer to buy a Glock 17 Gen 4 as my first pistol. I've fired it a few times and from what I've heard it's not bad. The guy at the store said it wasn't worth it and recommended the CZ sp-01 shadow instead for about the same price. If anyone has any suggestions on which one I should go with I'd really appreciate it. Also if you have any other suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

Glocks suck. The Shadow is excellent. :)

That said, a .22LR pistol is probably a better choice for your first gun for a variety of reasons. You can search the forum for advice on your first pistol. Set the search range to 3 years. The default search time range is something like in the last week.

As thenewbieglockguy said Glock first, CZ second.. the Glock is easy to maintain, clean and make small upgrades by your self till you can get some experience without needing a lot of support it helps you establish good basic skills.

The CZ has better ergos generally and has a different characteristics and much easier to shoot as a novice but sometimes masks shooting weaknesses as it's much heavier.

I like and have both would not give up either..

Fit is the most important. What feels better/natural in your hand. Best is to fire them, feel the recoil. One will tend to group better than the other.

They are both excellent pistols,,,I have a cz combat and am very happy with it,,I've shot the Glock, don't own one, but it doesn't fit my hand as well and I didn't like the trigger as well, but I think with use, I could get used to it.

I like the adjustable sights, and single stage trigger feature on the cz,,as I started on a Gold Cup 1911.

You can't go wrong with either and there is nothing wrong with owning both.

two very different tools I think.
The Glock is the ATV, lightweight, great for carry combat gun. The Cz is all metal, better engineered, better fit, easier to shoot well, but if I have to choose one, I don't know. I guess that if it is for carry I would choose the Glock but competition wise, you gotta go a great shooter to shoot the Glock better than the CZ.
It is one of those things, you gotta try them out. I like polymer guns for shooters, they are easier to maintain.
Whatever you choose, you will no go wrong. In the IPSC crowd everybody and their brother have either one.

I am not a polymer hater and in fact tried few ones, Glock and Ruger among them. Both shoots decent groups and needs very little maintenance. However, an all steel pistol has proven itself for years. 1911s, BHPs and its clones are battle tested platforms. Newer manufacturing technology and emergence of hi-tech materials lead to the use of polymers in firearms. If you are comfortable with Glock, go for it. Being happy and satisfied with your purchase is all you need. Ignore the bashing from onlookers. I have few CZs, SP01 Shadowline being the latest and I have not looked back. If you have not made the purchase, find a rental range or even politely asked club members and try as much pistols you can get. Just buy a good ammo so you cannot blame ammo for bad groupings. My main criteria in choosing a pistol: Grip, Sight Picture, Weight/balance and recoil.

I have both G17 gen4 and cz 75 sp01 shadow. Love them both and shoot both equally well. Different guns that feel different in hand.

One should always get gun that fits them better. Best would be to try and shoot both and choose. My advise would be buy both like i did. :)

If I had to make a choice and keep only one of them would be CZ.

Wait, sounds like he is overcharging for Glocks or under-prices the Shadow ...unless it's used. Shadow costs more money so if they are the same price new get the CZ. You can get a used 17 gen4 for $650, Shadows even used cost $750+

Both are great guns btw. Look at Beretta 92 Inox if you want another great, but even better looking gun :D
