Just received my G17 gen 5 from Al Flaherty's, man these guys don't d*** around with shipping once transfer is complete, top notch!

I have owned a G17 gen 3, and 2x G17 gen 4s in the past.
Hated the gen 3 because of the grip, already liked the grip texture and size much better on gen 4, as it had shrunk a bit, and could come get back up to gen 3 size with inserts.
Still had issues with gen 4, as finger grooves we're not at all in alignment with my hand, which was an irritant to some extent.

Right now my first impressions of the gen 5

-I really like the magwell, in dry fire i could do some nice reloads right off the bat.
-Trigger is the cleanest heavy trigger i have tried, never seen another 5-6 lbs trigger break that clean, no creep whatsoever.
-Rear sight is already drifted to the right, seems like glock wanted to save me the hassle as i always ended up drifting them!
-Slide finish is really beautiful, the first holster scuffs would be painfull to watch if i cared more, since it's a 700$ disposable glock it can be used hard and easily replace once needed.
-Grip is getting close to perfection, no issues with angle here, i got either an 1911 or a glock mindset when i pick up a gun and i always end up pointing at the right place. When gen 6 comes out in quite a while, if they undercut trigger guard just a bit more i'd be really happy.

I'm giving myself 3000 test rounds for this one.
If i end up appreciating it i will buy 3 more factory mags, holster, and dawson precision competition sights.
If not it will either be a guest teaching gun, or up on the EE

Going to the range tonight with 350x 147gr rounds, will break this in and get first accuracy impressions right there.
If it shoots high i'll bring 125gr next time.
Target picture may be posted if i get to it!

Curious to see ow the new nDLC slide finish holds up, got to be better than the Gen 4 chalkboard finish.

Myself find the switch from gen 4 to gen 5 worth it.
As in if i had a gen 4, id slap it on the EE for 600$ and get a 750$ brand new gen 5
But this is my opinion and you know what they say about opinions...

Only shot 180 rounds tonight
Was not as ready to come back after injury as i thought i would

2 more impressions we’re made
-the gun is more accurate that previous gens, definitely
-the factory sights are usable. Not ideal or the best, but not garbage.
Rear sight notch looks deeper and wider, front sight post looks slightly thinner.
Makes them usable.

Furthest i went tonight was 15M as slowly worked my way up.
Managed to get all alphas on a mini target, group was low though
Shooting 147s with 3.4gr tite group

As if the factory sights, point of impact was center with front sight dot
Instead of being flush over front sight when both sights are in line

Usually point of impact raises as you raise amount of grains of bullet, when keeping within same PF

I’ll continue 147s for now as I’m out of competition circles anyways at this moment.

Got a 2nd range day clocked in.
This time i brought 350 rounds and shot them all.
Once again, this gun does not fail to impress me.

What it can shoot and group for a 750$ gun is unbelievable.
IPSC mini target at 20M and i got all my As for 20 rounds in a row. Still going on factory sights.
Even if i ordered DP competition sights, i may end up keeping factory ones.

Gen5 glock is fricking accurate, for a glock.
Will never be as accurate as a custom 1911/2011, but once again for the price, lot's of bang for the buck.

Ordering an IPSC holster right now, still undecided between ghost and bladetech, something with a drop offset.
Even if not going seriously at it, i'll try it at matches see if it can give a little competition to a few guns.

It would seem like they compensated for most RH shooters like me who cannot use propper technique to shoot centered.
If i get all my As at 7M, 10M, 15M, 20M, what would be the problem?

So YOU’RE the guy who bought Al’s last Gen 5 before I could. LOL

Great write-up. I can’t wait for mine to arrive tomorrow. Thanks for the preview!

Yes i am haha!
I was on the fence at first but they we're sure selling out quick.

Cleaned it up this afternoon, 500 rounds later.
This may well be the less durable glock finish yet. It was well lubed too i have been at this game for a while now and take really care of my guns.
Breachface finish all gone, barrel has clear lines we're finish is worn all out (where barrel muzzle contacts slide), and inside slide where top barrel hood makes contact is also using quick.
My 500 rounds gen 5 looks like a 3000 rounds gen 4

Not that i care all that much but just another tidbit to add in there, so once i start dry firing i suspect slide finish will wear quick, unless nDLC finish is more resilient to kydex than metal parts rubbing together.

Congrats!
Since my last post the round count has progressed quite a bit.
Now in the 6000s.

So far...
I have been dry firing a lot and doing matches from a kydex holster, exterior finish doesn't have a scratch.
The finish on the barrel and inside the slide where the barrel hood rubs, is bare metal in many places, it used up very quickly.
Been field stripping and thoroughly cleaning/relube every 500 rounds, even if not required my 1911 habits are hard to break.
The ameriglo BOLD w/square rear notch and big orange front sight are awesome, no regrets there. Also had no choice as I had melted front sight in a 500 round range session. Front sight didn't fall off but had this cant to it dipping to a side.

Tried the trigger once again of a gen 4 last week, can't tell what's improved so much.
Barrel accuracy still rocks, with previous gens I never managed to get 10x As in a row, slow firing, at 20M+, on a mini target.
It's not quite like a shadow 2 or an SV/STI 1911/2011, but it beats many many guns I have tried in the accuracy department.
For 750$ it's a no brainer i'll get a second in the spring as backup.

Marty - what lube-ing if any would you recommend before my first range visit with my shiny new G17 Gen5?

Cheers

I just apply a tiny bit of G96 or Rem Oil or whatever you normally use to the small metal rails on the frame. Cycle the action a few times and you’re good to go.

You can apply a light coat to the guide rod spring and hand rub in on the outside of the barrel if you want but not really necessary.

Still Alive has got it right.
Many ways around it though.

I found a youtube video on glock lubing i’ll try to find and share, as glocks do not like over lubrification like 1911s.
Lubing is very minimal.

I’d say the #1 most important thing with a new glock, don’t clean that brown residue inside it.
It’s actually a lube meant for storage and break in, or so i was told.

I ordered my Glock 17,Gen 5 in April before i even received my RPAL.
I could hardly wait for all the stars to line up.
Has shoulder surgery in June. Received my Glock in July.I couldnt shoot until August (used left hand)
Now ive started to shoot right hand and boy i sure love my Glock. Its everything i was hoping it would be.
Been through about 500 rounds.
Love it!

I"m about a couple of hundred rds down the pipe on the G19X, & couldn't agree more about the accuracy and the Ameriglo sights, I have the agent ones and they are great!!
Good review
