G17 Mag Follower & Reloads

Hey Folks,

I just started reloading. Using a Dillon 550 with Lee 4 Die carbide set to reload for 9mm. Projectiles are AIM 124grain copper plated, and I am using 3.8 grains of titegroup with CCI primers.

Shot off about 30 of these to see if they worked. Slide cycled fine (was running a G34), but I did have two FTF stoppages.

After shooting I checked my mags, and noticed some small gouges in the followers that weren't there before. They were located just where the front edge of the case is, and extended a small distance forward of that.

I tried to not crimp these too hard, as I have read that overcrimping is bad for plated bullets. That said, has anyone encountered this issue? I am thinking that maybe I need to crimp the bullet a bit more, as it seems like the edge of the case is gouging the follower when it is being fed. I think this is likely why I had a couple FTF's as well.

The 9mm headspaces on the case mouth, so don't crimp it beyond straight or you will mess up the headspacing.

Re-check your die adjustment, the FCD should be just touching the shell holder with NO gap, run a loaded round into the die with the crimp stem backed off 1-2 turns and adjust the stem in till it touches the bullet, lower the round out of the die and turn crimp stem in 1/8-1/4 for no crimp (removes any extra case belling) or 1/2 turn for a lite crimp.

Be very carefull crimping plated bullets, they deform easily compared to jacketed bullets.
