G17 or M&P9?... or XDM

I shot both Glock and M&P (in Vegas!) to decide. I got an M&P Pro. The Glock felt like a box in my hand, the M&P is more contoured. And I got the pro version since the trigger is much better than the regular M&P.

But you can`t go wrong with either pistol, personal preference is what counts here.

Answer to your question, and another... perhaps better alternative

- Here is the best thing for you to do.

Buy both.

Shoot them for few months and decide which one you like better.

Glock 17 and M&P9 are very popular firearms, and you will have zero problems selling one of them, once your decision has been made.

- Now, this is what I would do.

I would buy Glock 34, and M&P 9 Pro, and compare those two.
Extended slide and barrel length, better trigger, better sights... etc... for slightly more, but worth it many times over.

I had shoot both , G17 and M&P 9 even their earlier generations, I think the Gen4 G17 is the sure winner ,also glock had numerous accessories to add on . Easy to find parts everywhere .

Another vote for the xdm....nothing wrong with the other two. Glock shoots ok but feels horrible. M&P feels better than glock but doesnt shoot as well as xdm.

Have both Glock17 Gen4 and M&P9, sold the M&P9 to get the Glock22 Gen4. I prefer the stock Glock trigger over the M&P9. I didn't want to spend 150$+ to get the APEX trigger for the M&P when you can get a 4.5lbs connector for the Glock for 25$ and still be able to use it for IPSC production. But in the end the best advice is to try them both or get them both and if you don't like it you can sell them on EE , you might loose a hundred bucks it's the cost of renting them a few time at your range.

I have to put up a vote for the Gen 4 G17. A thread has started about frame droop in the S&W:

I'm sure it doesn't happen to all the S&W but it scares me a little.

....and Glock is taking S&W to court for copying rights.

Glock did that with the old Sigma. I think they made changes, and settled out of court. The trigger safety is different, for example.

I've handled the M&P, and am considering buying one of the range kits, in 9mm. The ergonomics are very good, even better than a USP. I do not like the Glock ergonomics, and Springfield doesn't allow third party servicing. And I like the conventional rifling. I have some experience with casting, and a hoard of wheelweights and whatnot. I haven't reloaded handgun ammo before, and the 9mm version looks to be less kaboomable. This may be heretical to S&W fans, but I think I'd avoid the .40 version.

Why is that?

That smith has been stipples...I'm sure that doesn't help

M&P9's have accuracy (not all but a significant % of them, and no not everybody and their dog shoot well enough to notice) and trigger issues, I myself wouldn't buy a gun that I have to buy and install an aftermarket part(s) just just to make it work properly.

The Glock will run right out of the box (probably), is very accurate, has a good trigger that is easily "trigger jobbed" for almost nothing. Mags and parts are plentiful AND cheap (for Canada anyway).

XDm and XD's in general... just ...no.

I think Dietz has good points. Right out of the box, Glocks are good to go...and the accessories, well, I could go on forever, but you'll see...if you go the way of the Glock.

This is what is steering me towards the Glock. Availability of parts and accessories. I might start with the Glock... but hey... no one says you need to stop at just one!

The M&P looks like a great pistol also... hard to decide.

One of the CGN'rs has offered to let me shoot their M&P... which is also up for grabs. Might have me a new purchase this weekend :)

Are you serious? That's just paranoia, look at Glocks, their frames curve up in the opposite direction under the muzzle as well.

Every M&P I have seen is like that, they are engineered that way for a reason. This is exactly how stupid internet rumors are started. You saw one thread and now it is fact? Do you believe everything you hear? How many Glock kaboom threads are there out there? Doesn't deter me or anyone I know from buying a Glock.

That being said. I have owned Glocks and M&Ps. I prefer the ergos of the M&P, but I shoot the Glock better. Try both and see what you like more.

As for the XDM, I do not imagine there is anything wrong with it, but they are rather expensive considering what the Glock and M&P cost. The XDM is for you if you want extra manual safeties.

M&P mags are $40 around here, there are 2 places out of 3 that have them in stock. A very small number of M&P9's have had accuracy issues - but less than the number of Gen 4 Glocks that have had extraction issues. An even smaller number of M&P Pro pistols had a trigger issue 2 years ago, but less than the number of Gen 4 Glocks that have had their RSA's recalled- oops, I'm sorry, that's EXCHANGED to ensure customer satisfaction. There is absolutely no requirement to purchase aftermarket parts to make an M&P9 function, neither my first one (1500 rounds) nor my current one (27,000 rounds - that isn't a misprint, and it may be a fair bit low) nor my M&P45 (5,000 rounds) needed any parts to make them work. The typical M&P9 out of the box is more accurate than the person holding it. There is no such condition as "frame droop" and any person suggesting that there is is simply showing their ignorance of the key difference between a Glock and an M&P.
