Hey all,
I was looking to purchase my first combat pistol.
Man the prices are high!
But I get what I pay for right?
Anyhow, I was looking at the USP and the 226, but I can't aford them
Don't quite like the Walthers, not enough good news about them.
Unfortunately the new Steyr M1A's, which is what I really want, are not yet out on the Canadian market (I contacted Steyr regarding this and they informed me that they were supposed to be releasing them during the summer  )
So, I'm down to the Glock.
I like the .40S&W cartridge. So what I'm asking, and I know that this has been beaten to death quite a few times, what are the reliability issues between the two? Which one is safer?
I do have the intention of reloading down the line but not at first.

And what king of mods are desireable?
I want a light yet crisp trigger and mangeable recoil using factory loads.

I wonder where I can get one in OD green ???

I thank you all for participating in this beaten to death topic :D

The glock had some issues in .40S&W, but they are generally more related to reloading issues. The 9mm has generally be a much more stable platform.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more, you can get factory refurbished Sigs for about the same price as new glocks.

There are various 9mm conversion barrels available for the G22, which allows you to shoot both calibres from one platform. I have personally never used one, but I do have a 10mm conversion for my Glock 21 which has worked great.

If you get the G17 you are limited to 9mm but still get a great pistol and the cache of owning a version of Glock's original model. Glock 17 was my first handgun.

Have a Sig 226 in 9mm and a Glock 22 in .40

There both great in there own way. I had the Glock 22 out last weekend and put 200 rounds threw it without a hiccup. Very nice. I won't comment on it's accuarcy as I pretty much suck at shooting pistols, but I hit paper each and every time :D The .40 does have a bit more snap too it than the 9mm but it's very managable and just makes it that much more enjoyable to shoot.

I have a G22 and reload it. The load I use actually has less felt recoil than a 9mm, it's pretty nice. If I weren't reloading though I would have gotten a G17.

ditto. downloaded 40SW just feels softer than factory 9mm (or at least comparable 9mm in terms of power factor.

I personally like the G22 over the G17 because I can load it up or down to suit my wants/needs. IF I didn't reload, then I would try to buy both to satisfy both ends of the power spectrum but because I reload, I can load for almost any occassion.

i hope you've tried handling the glocks already, as not everyone likes the way they point, if you're okay /w them then get one. Its no use buying a gun that doesn't fit you just right...

good luck

I was behind a guy at BRRC in Burlington one PPC night... when his .40 Glock blew up real goood. Wasn't hurt though... luckily

Dont let that scare you off Glocks though.. Pretty much any of the models out there have had a kaboom for one reason or another at some point. Yes, even the 1911, the SIG and others  . Again, it can be for different reasons, but there is no 100% foolproof model out there....Personally I have both the G17 and the G22, and have been feeding them both reloads for years, without a single problem Take your time and be careful, and follow spec. Personally, I lean toward the G22 but thats my opinion.
Well that ought to fire up the troops..Time to hunker down, sit back and watch the show..

Okay, lets suppose that one day the mag capcity laws dissapear.
What would you go for 17rnds (9mm) or 15rnds or even a bit less for .40?
I have also seen a study that G17's have never been reported to have blown up.
Not sure it that's true (hell reloads will blow anything up) but I still like the stopping power of .40S&W.
>.45GAP sounds nice but pricey

Well, to me, mag capacity isnt an issue here in Canada, as we as private citizens can't use them for hunting or carry/protection(well, some certain priviledged individuals) . If you cant hit your target in a couple of rounds, having a whole fistful of extras really doesnt matter. The trick is to master the shot placement in a consistent manner. If your debating over 2 rounds, you may want to rethink your priorities. First you need to decide on what caliber you want to shoot, and what feels best for you. The added pop of the 40 is more appealing to some and there are those who prefer the gentler 9mm. Its all a matter of preference  . Maybe go to a range where a member will let u try the weapon, and make the decision based on that. The fit/feel is the same on both, so its up to you to make the final decision.
Good luck with it.

G17. Factory 9mm is readily available and cheaper to shoot.

If I was going to reload, it would be in 10mm, for a G20. 8)

.40 is almost as cheap(and easy to find brass) and brass is impossible to find cheaply for 10mm.new 10mm aint cheap either!!

$8.93/box vs. $12.85 a box for factory is no comparison, it's half again more.

9mm is fun to shoot, and cheap. G17s are boringly reliable. That's prety much all there is to say, right?

G22 for sure...and get the 9mm caliber exchange kit when you see one on 'ee'...best of both worlds..and both have run without fault for me...
