Hey Gunnutz world....

I have been collecting parts for an SL8 conversion to a G36....

but have come across the G36 mag part.

Are these mags really much better than doing the AR mag conversion?

WHAT is a good price for a mint mag, pinned for Canada?

What is a good price for the conversion grip, there is a 2 piece and a 1 piece I have seen on some SL8s for sale here in the EE....

Well basically, I am just trying to see if I should eventually find an SL8 rifle to convert or get something else.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

My scholarly advice is to leave that pig as it is. Pimping and SL8 is like polishing a turd. It is what it is. If you want a genuine black rifle - buy one and save some money.

Not to start a dog fight or anything but if I had to choose between a G36 or an AR - I would take the AR. They can be modded into anything ya want, the after market for them is incredible, and the smiths know them inside-out and our gun nut suppliers carry truckloads of stuff for them. The minute you want to do anything to an SL8 your are talking big $$$$ for what is essentially cosmetics.

Mind you, I say that as a range rat and civvie - the squaddies that actually fight with guns might have a differing opinion.

Hey Glen.....I know the AR platform is wildly available....I see the parts on EE all the time, and MAYBE 1 or 2 parts for an SL8 a month....IF that....
BUT the AR is restricted here....so how fun is that??....Not for me..I want to be out in the back 40 doing my thing without worry of restrictions.....

Cratcher....the mags are kinda clear but dark grey/black I guess....OEM G36 mags from HK....Wondering what these sell for in Canada.

NOW do I keep the parts and make a unique HK that is like a needle in a hay stack of AR's or stop before Im too deep.???

Anyone else have any thoughts on price and value?

The last G36 mag I saw for sale was well over $100 (IRC it was $120). As far as building a G36 clone goes, you're going to end up with $2,000 gun with $3,000 worth of parts and specialized work done to it - if you're absolutley set on having a G36 fair enough, but if you're just looking for something different on the firing line I personally would lean toward the Tavor.

HK G36 mags usually sell at $100+ each, not widely available in Canada, no dealers sell them.
But now that the magpul G36 mags out, I'm guessing HK mags are worth a little less. I still prefer the G36 mags, more authentic, and they have the coupler.
Another option is Spear G36 mags, but I wouldn't even consider them for the price.

And the pistol grip conversion will cost about $1,000 - $1,200
HK G36c stock with stock pin
HK G36 FBI lower housing
Stock block

Avoid the one piece top notch conversion, it's garbage.

I owned a G36/SL8 Conversion a couple of years back...when I saw it I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO HAVE IT...and got it.

The balance was terrible (a 20" heavy barrel with essentially a skeleton stock), the HK dual optic was a POS compared to the optics I use on my ARs, I had 2 authentic mags for it ($140 apiece)...and in all, I had a lot of money sunk into a rifle that was pretending to be something it wasnt.

I then looked into getting a 14.5" or 8" barrel for it (to make a G36K, or G36C type rifle) and correct the balance issues...but by that point it would be restricted and no different from my AR.

I decided to sell it, and ended up losing about $800 on it, after owning it for a month. sure it might be a needle in a haystack of ARs...but its like dressing up a 10/22 to look like a Tavor...its still a 10/22 with a lot of expensive furniture on it...my $0.02

My advice, is if you're going to put that kind of money into a non-restricted rifle, look at the Bushmaster ACR (with NR barrel), or a Tavor. Both take AR mags, and will generally hold their value because they are the real deal...and not another rifle pretending to be something its not.

Anyone seen the Magpul G36 mags in person? or have a side by side comparison pics to post?
ALso how would the HK G36 mags be pinned? on the spine like the Magpuls?

Re: SL8/ G36 magazines

The H&K mags work very very well and I have yet to have a failure from my 4x 30/5 mags. Sturdy, smooth, reliable and feed all sorts of 5.56x45mm/ .223 Remington ammo that I have fed it.

The down side is that they are pricey at ~$70 each and availability is limited. Hence the popularity of the AR15 mag well adapters. NEA manufactures one for the Canadian market.

From what I have witnessed on the range, AR15 mag well adapters seem to work well, but I personally do not use one for the following two reasons:
a) it is an oxidized aluminum part on a composite gun - sticks out as an obvious non-OEM add-on and (to me) detracts from the clean look of the rifle.
b) requires minor modifications to the firearm to fit - so not a true plug and play. As a general rule, I avoid add-ons that permanently modify a firearm.

To conclude: the mags are pricey and worth it but if magazine cost is concern, the AR15 mag well adapter may be a better option as it allows you to use relatively plentiful and cheap AR15 mags.
