G4C Just Got In Limited Numbers of the HK SL8-5 and SL8-4 - GREAT PRICE

Pretty much. But hey, you wanna play, you gotta pay! lol

Yeah, maybe I would've bought a complete build and saved some money, but I'd rather buy a BT or TI G36 new if we are looking at that range. I almost got a SL8, I must admit lol. They are accurate and I like accurate.

Magwell money has to be spent on proprietary mags in a "no magwell" option, and as many other people, I have quite a few Ar15 mags laying around.. So that $500 is gone anyways.

What makes the G36 and SL8 so reliable is the proprietary mags. G36 P Mags are readily available if you want a cheaper alternative. $500 buys 10 mags

Can't be further from the truth...

In fact, I met an ex-Swedish SF guy that served in Afganistan, he said when he was deployed with G36 he used it with the Spuhr AR magwell.

Nothing to do with reliability, but a compatibility issue. The big G36 mags are a bulky pain in the behind, but ultra reliable. Not so say the SPUHR conversion with P-Mags or whatever mags is bad, (it's quite good, I have one!) but not as good in my opinion as the original G36 mags. Going into theater with supply chains and such maybe one would opt for the a conversion and P-Mags, when in a world of AR FOW's.

The issue with stanag pattern mags is the amount of manufacturers, you can literally induce a failure to feed in a stanag compatible rifle by swapping mag manufacturers.

I have had no reliability issues with G36 p mags and HK magazines in the SL8 or G36. However with the spur mag well there is various brands of stanag magazine manufacture that will cause failure. This isn't just because of the conversion, you can do the same in an AR, not all stanag pattern mags are created equal, as you said, it comes down to supply chains. The good part of that being there is not a bunch of companies making mags of varying quality for the g36

But why would they?

If the G36 mags are so reliable why didn't H&K use G36 mags on the HK433? Oh wait, I know why!

Because logistically it makes more sense to run stanag compatible magazines. Of which Hk now makes some as well. The G36 mags while being phenomenally reliable for having a constant curvature are way bulkier than a pmag or a lancer or gi mags. Also more and more nations are picking stanag mag compatibility so it would be hard to sell a propietary magazine. Lastly The Bundeswehr has become much more active in international NATO operations and having a greater compatibility with partner forces is a much higher priority than when they chose the G36.

The G36/SIG style mags are made of polycarbonate and they were designed from the ground up for that material. It needs a base plate to compress the side walls to give it strength. They also stack better and are much more generous in internal space so to have room for dirt to move. that's how they end up with big magazines.

AR mags are designed for folding alumium and spot wielding. This makes it thin and the mag well is small. Because of this, it was a problem for early manufacturers like thermeld and orlite to make durable mags. Magpul Pmag was successful because they found the right polymer and also their design was good in stealing every single pocket in that envelope to reinforce the mags.

But still, AR mags are internally "tight mags" - it is compact to carry but the trade off is no space for debris to move through.

The reality is that users have a say too - you can argue that that there are more M16 and M4 than anything else produced in the entire EU combined together, so it makes sense for the allies to use American. The other side of the coin is that the Americans special forces have a lot of influence on the other special forces too through training and op - arguably US shooting techniques have a lot of influence on the allies. Throwing the gun nuts mentality away, people tend to choose what works the most efficiently. Over the years, that influence filters down.

Kinda like the things we watched on Magpul video back in 2007 becomes the super new cutting edge CF drills sometime 15 years later literally frame by frame, and the magpul guys probably got those things somewhere in 2003 and added some of their own twists.

I couldn’t care less about using HK parts and being all perfect how much would it cost to get this rifle and make it look like a g36 from 5 feet away

My numbers added up like that

My back of the napkin calculations resulted in ~$4250 before tax and shipping, that includes hera stock adapter, acr stock, spuhr magwell and an aftermrket lower height full picattinny top rail.. add extra cost for barrel threading and a muzzle brake of choice if desired. That lands it firmly in the B&T territory and also requires sourcing parts from different vendors and putting it all together. Still a bit cheaper then TI imported G36, but not that significantly. I may just wait for another G36 shipment from TI next year, they bring them in small batches from time to time.
