Gaillard or Smith Barrel?

I talked to a fellow recently

and he said that he borescoped the last 2 Gaillard barrels that he got and he said he could not see any tooling marks. He was very impresed with what he saw. Hopefully they shoot as well as the pipes look.

I have an RKS on my .300 and would gladly run it next to any other on the market custom or factory and I know it would hold its own, . Im not takeing from Gaillard, or others as they are excellent also Rock creek is realy makeing a name for itself, probably one I will try in the future. The Barrel is only a part of the tuned machine and if the rest of the machine is in tune with the barrell your going to have an outstanding shooter regaurdless if it was made by Ron, Ted, Mcphee, Rock Creek or whoever. They all take a great deal of pride in the work they do and do it well.

Mick McPhee will be putting the rifle together, so I KNOW it will be a tack driver. If I was going .308 then I would just have Mick make me the barrel himself.

I would suggest you talk to Mick. I have had the opportunity to play with some of his work and it is tight and accurate, all were top notch builds. Im sure he wouldnt steer you wrong and set you up with something that he knows works with his style of building and your preferences. Post pics and let us see how it comes together for you when it's done.

Nuthin' wrong with Mick's barrels, that is for sure!!
I have one of his on my 300WSM long range rig, and it is a super barrel, does not foul bad, and stays hummin' right in there as it warms up....

Occasionally there are barrel twists/sizes that are not commonly available.
This is when I will venture outside Gaillard...(insert your favorite barrel here).

Rock Creek for instance offers a 338 bore in 9.5" twist. Some believe that this works better with the 300 SMK (that is why you see so many heavy 338's with them).
Those guys should buy a Rock Creek for their 338.

Gaillard refuses to build me barrels in 270, 375, 416, 458, and 510 so I went to his competitors for those....All shot well.

I was talking to him at the range the other day and told him I was thinking of going with a Gaillard barrel instead and he didn't try to talk me out of it. I would assume that if he didn't think the Gaillard would be a good choice he would have said something.

Also, how big of a PITA is it to get said Shilen barrels over the border? Or any other US barrel makers for that matter?

I have a Mike Rock 22" M24 contour heavy fluted barrel on my rifle and it shoots much better than I do. The best group I got with the thing was a one hole ragged group using a bipod with a rear bag. I can't shoot that good on a regular basis but compared to the factory Remington 700P barrel that was on it previously, there is no comparison. Checked the barrel with borescope and no tooling marks whatsoever, the Reminton barrel however was a different story. HWSNBN is the now Cdn dealer for Rock Creek Barrels, got that directly from Mike Rock himself.

Not yet, I was at Whoresale today looking at the XR-100 again but the guy I wanted to deal with was not working. I know I can get him to throw in a couple of boxes of UMC 40 round Value Pack 22-250 ammo for nothing (been working him awhile now ) then I can at least shoot it while I wait for a barrel to be made, or until I build the bank account back up a little again whichever comes first

Mick has a guy that has a Smith barrel in 6.5x47 Lapua that is for sale, he told me I could probably "jew" him down on the price. (No disrespect to jewish ppl, it was a quote) so I am milling that option over as well.

I run a McPhee match barrel and couldn't be happier with it.

Last time I was out my rig was holding 0.25" groups out to 200 meters, and 1" groups at 300 meters................

As has been said MANY times, you can't really go wrong with any of the top barrel names..........Quite a few of the Canadian barrel makers are just as good or better then anything else available from the U.S. or abroad.........

I run McPhee ,Smith ,Krieger and Shultz and Larson barrels on my rifles they are work exceptionaly well and I am hard pressed to tell the difference Go with a McPhee you wont regret it

So I bought the damn XR-100 yesterday and put a box of factory ammo through it today. I can't wait to get a barrel on the thing now but will have to save up for a couple of pay periods. I would post a pic but it's just a stock XR-100 with a Barska scope on it. Nothing to wet anyones panties......YET. I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 Mildot on the way for it so maybe I'll post a pic after it arrives.
