Not sure if this thread belongs here or in the Black Rifles forum because the Galil can be considered either/or.

Anyway, does anyone have or know anybody that has a Galil in Canada? I know of someone that has a converted auto Galil in .308, but not sure if any 5.56 versions were imported (commercial semi or converted) to Canada. I know theres a few in the U.S that command a pretty big price tag.
Next question: Has anyone ever fired a Galil? Either a commercial version or a military version? Ever fire it on full auto?
Anyway, any contributions to this thread are appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

Note: I know any and all Galils are prohibited in Canada as 12-2, 12-3 or 12-5 class prohibs. Thanks.

The only ones I ever saw for sale were CA Galils that used to be in OGT ads in Gunrunner long ago.

Don't know if this helps, but Collector's Source has a dewat 5.56 Galil listed on their site.

Other than that, I remember seeing one in 5.56 displayed at the Irishtown, NB gun show in 2010 or 2011.

Semi Auto Galils were sold by James Kish & Co in Vancouver, along with NR Uzi Carbines, Black Steyr AUGS and all sorts of other terrific toys. They did sell quite a few of the Galils, so they're out there somewhere - maybe they evaporated along with container loads of other rifles (AK's, M14's and HK's) that went direct to prohib from NR.

In regards to the commercial versions (12.5) rifles, there were the AR and ARM models in 223 and 308. The difference being the ARM models had an issue bipod on the front, which really made it too unwieldly unless you had full auto capability and was using it as a SAW. The ARM I think was more suited for those who wanted the SAW look (of course it was semi only).

I've owned and shot both AR Galil models in both calibers. Still have my 223 Galil, and I shot it a few times in local service rifle matches before using it for this purpose was banned in 2005. The "double circle" sight picture was superior to the AR15/M16 series IMHO for deliberate shooting. The sight adjustments weren't however.

I always thought of it as being the most refined AK (along with the Valmets). The accuracy of them (the commercial versions) that I owned/fired rivaled that of the AR-15's that I owned at the time. Looking back at my records showed some pretty high scores provided I guesstimated the right amount of front sight post elevation adjustment between 100, 200 and 300 meters.

Lots of places had Galils in the late 80's. If you can find back issues of "Canadian Access to firearms" or "Gunrunner" anywhere, you'd see lots of cool stuff. Ahhh, the good ol' days....

I have a few Valmet Hunters in .308. I'm almost finished converting one to an M76 and along the way I've found that the early Galil and Valmets were pretty much the same thing.

AK47.c om has some interesting stuff to read.

That is no coincidence. The Israelis started with a clean sheet to design a new rifle. What worked on existing rifles, what did they like, and what didn't work? They liked the AK receiver, the PARA FN FAL stock, the FN FAL carrying handle, the M16 barrel and Stoner magazines. With their favourite elements decided, they sourced parts. Apparently Valmet sold them shelf stock receivers for the prototypes.

I would love to have the 223 working version to go with my 7.62 Galil.

Mostly I would love to legally take it to the Club again :(:(:(
It was/is a fine functioning Rifle which when using IVI milspec ammo would keyhole very nicely @ 100m. --due to the slow twist rate of 1x12" .
