Hopefully I'll be field-dressing my first deer in the next couple of weeks. I think butchering may be more than I can take on this year - is there a game-savvy butcher anywhere within an hour or so of Ottawa/Gatineau that I could deal with? Any comments on cost, contacting ahead of time, and how to prep for delivery would also be appreciated.

Thanks folks -

I was doing some research and apparently Rideau Meats in Smiths Falls will handle game. I'll call today to get more details. Would still be interested to hear if anyone knows of another place...

I had mine butchered last year by Bearbrook Farms, just southeast of Ottawa.. Kind of expensive, but I did get a lot of vacuum sealed sausage. I would say I had a positive experience with them.

Thanks guys - nice to have options.

I'll be taking my meat on the Quebec side this year... so am still hoping to find something in the Gatineau but it looks like I'm covered over here.

M. Scheel Packers in Pakenham, less than an hour from Oddawa.

I do not have a current price list from them, and have always butchered my own deer, but I HAVE tasted their pepperettes and other prepared meats, and they are FABULOUS.

Doug - I suppose that they'd accept frozen meat from past years that is still "safe", but perhaps a bit past its "best before" date?

back to Andy..........I am certain that would be the case, but a phone call is cheap. ;)

If Scheel will not work with older meat, there is a butcher in Trenton who does prepared meats (pepperettes, salami, smokies, etc) who will grind up pretty much anything...........their venison pepperettes are mediocre, but other products are excellent. Their fresh sausages are also very good. Windmill Sausages on Frankford Crescent in Trenton.

The pepperettes would close the deal for me - that's what I'm looking for. Appreciate the tips guys - good to have a few choices - I'll make some calls re prices, etc and post the results back here. Messine is definately in the right neck of the woods too.
