No tips to offer but we just tried ours for this first time last week. Got two or three different smaller bears on pics (one with and without white chest patch). Then we got a close up pic of the bear tearing the cam off the tree - pic two below. It bent and broke the little pad lock in the process.

Here below are the last four pics on the camera in sequence. Notice the date and time stamps. My son thought someone stole the camera until he saw it on the ground and picked it up for a look over - the last two pics. The camera was on the ground inactive for the last three days. No decent size bears appeared on film so we moved it last night to another spot for a look. They are kind of fun. I think you'll like yours when you figure it out.

I just got one of those to and found that the trigger time is slower than expected. (others confirmed this as well)

Make sure if you are setting it up on a trail that it is facing down the trail so the animal stays in the infrared and camera lens for as long as possible. If it is parallel to the trail, the animal will trigger it but be out of frame before camera responds. Also try and keep it from being exposed to sunlight as it is an infrared sensor and moving leaves in front of the sun will set it off.

That is what I learned so far but I am pretty new to it as well.
 
As mentioned be carefull when using the straps. The reason is because of the way the straps are connected to the unit. When it is tightened, it opens up the battery compartment slightly allowing water to enter. Its for this reason I made my own metal bracket that screws to the tree, and I use the threaded hole in the bottom of the camera to mount it to my bracket.

Another thing about your model, is that many of these units have a problem changing from IR (which gives B+W pics) to reg camera giving color pics during the day. Try and keep it in the open as much as possible so it gets as much sunlight as possible so you get more color photos.

I have taken over a thousand pics with mine and when they are in color the pics come out real nice.

The batteries also last a very long time. If i remember correctly I only changed my batteries after 800 pics or more.

Its a great site to learn tricks and read reviews on camera. They give the most popular cameras real life tests and do great reviews. The I40 has had a lot of testing. Ck it out.
 
If your Moultrie is like mine..you'll love it, works great. As for tips:
1. I've had the best luck pointing the cam either either north or south
2. get at least 2 SD cards to swap out each trip ( I use 512MB cards, gives room for about 500 pics)
3. Like aj cave said don't over tighten the strap (water leakage problem)
4. Fresh Duracell's should last you for the whole season

Just have to place it where the neighbours won't steal it on you.
I suggest you put it where only you and Dumbdawg know where it is, and keep stuff out of the background of the shots that would easily reveal it's location.
 
I bought a first i-40 this winter, realy liked it but i got it stolen... i bought a second one recently and decided to get the Anti-theft metal box. If they want to steel it again i wish em good luck. Here's a picture taken in may. The only problem with it is that when it's dawn or dusk the pictures are often in infrared mode even if there,s light.

I have a Moultrie Solar panel on my feeder, and a bear decided to wack it breaking the bracket holding it to the drum. I moved my feeder to another area of the farm and duct taped it back together. A chipmunk then decided to eat the wire that goes from the solar panel to the feeder motor, so I spliced it back up. Then this hungry rodent did it again but right at the base of the plug where I could not fix it.

So, I called Moultrie asking if they had a spare wire and bracket I could purchase. They mailed me a complete new solar panel (these are about $30) within two weeks NO CHARGE.

Great customer service !!!


P.S if you have a feeder, make sure to run the wire through a wire harness or some kind of tube.
 
the metal case is a good idea, the bear messed around with my camera last week, It was moved a little and I Have some very close up pics to show for it too. no physical damage but I believe I was lucky.

I think most cams come with laser pointer installed in the camera. I know that the Moultrie ones do.

Agreed. The first pic i got on my cam was a bunch of bear hair. He just layed right into the cam and broke it. I tried mounting my cam 6 to 7ft up with it aimed downward, but I found by doing this, not enough light was getting to the sensor, and most my pics would come out black and white.
