I've been thinking of building one of these forever. Finally threw it together the other day.

It's mainly 2"x2"x1/4" tubing, with a short stub of 3"x3"X1/4", for the vertical piece to slide into.

There are 2 pulleys on the vertical, for the cable to run through, but I only had one in place, when I took the picture.

Original intent was simply to hoist deer-elk type stuff up into the truck box, but I can also see where I'll end up using it to hold game for skinning-dressing.

It's 8' tall. I may add an extension, to raise it higher, depending on how well it works.

Looks good... that will prove to be handy.

If I had that rig I would miss the bloody camo clothes from wrapping my arms around the chest of game and heaving it up while at the same time pulling down on a cinch strap...

Where's the fun in turning a handle??? ;)

I think yoy may have to get your top a bit higher to be able to swing a deer in to the back of the truck. Be nice to have the top swivel. Nice job ...Dutch

^ I thought about having it swivel, but I can simply turn it 90deg, in the receiver socket. That will lift the load, right to the edge of the endgate. So then it should be easy to manoeuvre a deer into the box.

Also, a swivel means the damn thing might want to swing around on me. I believe having it in a fixed position is better. Obviously there's ways to have it swivel, but fix it in position with a pin...

So somebody looking to build a similar hoist could always do that.

Frankly I was in a rush, when I was building this, cuz I wanted to get it loaded and go out hunting!

And as I said, a 4'-6' extension is 'definitely maybe' possible...

If you add a swivel just drill a hole and use a spring loaded cotter pin to keep it from pivoting...

Edit; oops... should have read your whole post... you already figured that out.

Looks good.

Nice and simple and best of all, you actually have something.

I have all sorts of dreams for a picker arm of some type to mount in my truck, each imagination has more features and options but so far it only exists in my imagination.

Good job on just going and building it.

^ It's hella simple...

12' total of 2"x2"x1/4" tubing, 6" of 3"x3"x1/4", 16" of 1-1/2"x1/4" flat bar. $64 for steel.

2 simple pulleys from CTC for $16.

$80 all in... I already had the old boat winch.

A guy could easily mount a small 2000lb electric winch on it, and rig that up with quick connect to your vehicle battery. Then there'd be no boring cranking either!

Edit to add: I built it with one of those el-cheapo Lincoln 230v stick welders that CTC sells.
