Gents,

I am planning to hunt coyote tomorrow in the Ganaraska forest with a 270wsm centerfire rifle. I have only a small-game licence + the daypass hopefully I can buy there.

Am I good to go?

I tried to read the hunting regulations, but there are so many exceptions in different townships for the season that I'm unable to figure it out clearly.
So it would be great if someone could confirm that there is an open season there for coyote and I don't need any other licence.

thanks for the help,

Rudi

I will go at first to the Forest Centre, park my car and then I think I look around in the west forest.

If you go just north of there on the 115 about 5 min to wilcox rd. hang a right on wilcox. You can get a pass at Ganaraska leathercraft. Thenn just follow the road around , there is a spot to park and you are right in the forest. Usually not very much traffic around there either.

Dave.

Thanks Dave!

I will check it out. So I don't need any other licence right? (Sorry for asking stupid questions, I'm a newbie)

You are good to go. Just make sure you are in the correct part of the forest. There is a large part of Ganaraska that is no hunting. The West forest is ok.

Just follow what triton said, and don't bother to go to the forest centre, they closed most of the time but you can get all the info/pass from Ganaraska leathercraft anyway .
The Forest centre is in the middle of the forest (no hunt zone) and you can't get through the small trails back to the hunting zone with you car/truck.

If you continue up the road from the Forest centre a little ways everything to your left (west) is ok for hunting. Most SUV's or trucks can drive it no problem. Might be a bit muddy now though. I don't find it bad starting out at the forest centre at all.
I will have to try where triton is saying next time though.

Here is the map of the whole forest with zoning.

download it and enlarge it with other viewer, you can see Forest centre located in the bottom part of Central Forest (see the upside down "L" shaped area?)

Hunting in The Ganaraska Forest

Hunters from across Ontario venture into the Ganaraska Forest throughout the year. Ganaraska Forest users should be aware that hunting is permitted in the West and East Forest areas as well as part of the Central Forest area. Forest maps indicate the no hunting zone within the Central Forest.

I have a more detail map of the central forest, and it show only the north end of the Central forest is open for hunting.

Follow triton's direstion will bring you to the west boundary of the forest, and you don't have much chance to get into no-hunt zone accidentally;)

Good luck...and don't forget to post a report of your hunt:)

Report of the hunt:
I think I'm the worst hunter in whole North-America. No coyote for me today. :(

I've just returned from the hunt. I went to the Ganaraska Leather as Triton advised. The owner is a nice guy, he told me the whole story how he shot a big black bear which wanted to eat his chicken, and he let me park my car there on his driveway, as the roads are snowy and muddy and my Chrysler Neon is not really good at off-road trailing. :)

It's still winter there, you can see more white, grey and brown than green, but in a few weeks by the time of turkey season it will be wonderful. Some pictures:

Thanks guys,

Rudi

p.s.: if you know what are those things in the pictures, please let me know and I will put there the proper comment. :)

Very nice pic's Rudi! I doubt if you are the worst hunter in north america. I already hold that title. Pretty nice spot there eh! I saw the biggest buck of my life right there. It was in the M/L season my rifle went bang. But no smoke! Thats hunting thow. Maybe we could hook up for a hunt some time there. Take care.

triton,

Just tell me one thing: are there coyotes at all??

I have never seen one there. But i'm sure there must be. There are quite a few farms in the area, as well as quite a number of rabbits, rodents and what not. So I would figure that there are coyotes too!

Dave.

hey Triton, whenever you feel that you need company on your hunting trip, I would be more than happy to join you. I have been living on asphalt for 30 years, and and experienced hunter could save me from hunting ghosts. :)

Coyote hunting is a specialized sport, and the learning curve is quite steep. The Ganaraska forest is frequented by a lot of people, hikers, ATV's, motocycles etc. The wildlife there is very tuned and they know what a hunter is, also the place is mostly forest which makes it hard to see long distances.
At this time of year the best place to go coyote hunting is on or near cattle and sheep operations... the coyotes know where the calves and lambs are being born!
