Sorry wasn't sure where to post this. Figured I'd stick with the people
I know and trust.

Couldn't find any info on the CFC website and did a quick search here
but nothing specific found.

What is the law regarding storage of non-restricted/restricted/prohibited
firearms in a detached garage?

I had an attached garage at my old condo and just rolled the vault in
there. I'm building a garage at the new house and was wondering about
the legalities.

Of course it will be alarmed, out of plain sight, and everything in a big
ass Browning vault.

Anyone?

Thx in advance.

FWIW, At one point I had a gunsmith license so I had inspections from the CFO. my guns were stored in a detached garage and alarmed. This was an old renovated barn. Our CFO had no problem with guns being there and not in house. Alberta CFO may choose to interpret the regulations differently tho.

Here is what the Firearms Act says:
5. (1) An individual may store a non-restricted firearm only if

(a) it is unloaded;

(b) it is

(i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device,

(ii) rendered inoperable by the removal of the bolt or bolt-carrier, or

(iii) stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into; and

(c) it is not readily accessible to ammunition, unless the ammunition is stored, together with or separately from the firearm, in a container or receptacle that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into.
If you meet these requirements, you should be legal.

Let us know what you find out.

Law stipulates "how", not "where".

Since I do most of my own gun repairs and modifications as well as work on other people’s rifles, I do not necessarily store them in my home all the time. I have a locked cabinet in my home as well as a locked cabinet at my place of work (where my shop is). Just make sure that the registration is at the same place as the corresponding firearm, and you are all set. As Fall Guy has said, the regulation does not stipulate "where" but rather "how" they are stored.

I know a LEO who has non's in a safe in his backyard shed. I believe restrictions on storing non's are pretty loose, but watch out for careless storage under the criminal code. Be safe.
