So everything is together, even fired a test round, functions well, but I can't insert the clip completely into the rifle, .308 by the way. The operating rod is a Springfield apparently converted to the short . 308 length and then back to normal, from Sarco. My thinking is that by doing the conversion, the spring channel has been shortened so the spring won't compress completely. Planning on shortening the spring by about 3/4 ", since that seems to be what's required, but would like some opinions first. Thanks

Can you lock the action back? Have you checked the Oprod for an internal restriction (i.e. Broken spring end?). What is the length of your Oprod spring? Take it apart and check you hooked the op-rod catch arm with clip latch arm propperly. If this is a new build, check to ensure the Oprod is not rubbing inside the stock? Check your cartridge clip, clip ejector, bullet guide and follower arm smoothness. Lastly, did you try another en bloc clip?

Is a new build and most parts are new as well. All seems good on the above. Also, well lubricated with the recommended grease. Operating spring is 50 cm. Aftermarket, that is supposed to be superior to the original . If I disconnect the operating spring, clip slides into place perfectly, which leads me to believe that's where the problem lies.

According to TM-9-1275, your 50cm(max free length is 20.25". 51.4cm) should be ok.
The other reasons are: A deformed clip, the point of the clip ejector is too long, burrs in the follower and slide ways, or interference is encountered between the bullet guide and follower arm.
TM-9-1275 is here. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. Add the W's. .biggerhammer.net/manuals/

Think my original analysis was right. I cut the spring, everything is hunky dory, gun cycles much easier and smoother. Put a whole clip through it, gotta love that Ping.:) Thanks.

Op rod spring length for a standard .30-06 chambered Garand is in the range of 19.75 to 20.25 inches. I have bought several op rod springs made for the shortened Italian 7.62 Tipo 2 Garands with 23.5 inch barrels and the correspondingly shortened op rod. These came from an Italian surplus parts source and measure 19 inches. They work just fine. All springs are not equal though as they may be made with a different tension. I think that it's a safe bet to use a standard Garand spring for these Tipo 2 rifles that measures at the bottom end of the range, or 19.75 inches. I just bobbed an extra length commercial spring to this length and will range test the rifle with it in the near future.

does this happen with all the clips? I have one clip that does the same thing, and kind of gets jammed in the rifle, but the other 3 insert without trouble. If it's only one clip doing it, it's probably a worn clip. Look for the ones stamped D.A.Q, they're usually the better ones, besides the one that i have troubles with.
