Garand gas cylinder blackening

This looks very good. Is the Nitron finish a surface coating or is it a reactive process with the steel which leaves the dimensions unchanged? If it is a surface coating it would build up inside the bore of the gas cyl and in other key fit areas like the splines, the threads and the gas port window. What was the cost of doing the gas cylinder?
 
I'm pretty sure it was blasted with something. The gas cylinder screw threads in perfectly. I also had the gas cylinder of my first Garand finished with Nitron. Here is a picture:

It matches the parkerized barrel perfectly

 
This is a very nice job which is preferable to a re-finish with a spray on/bake on coating or a DIY job using Caswell's Stainless Steel blackener. It is a quite pricey though, so a person wants to make sure that a gas cyl is fully serviceable, especially the interior bore dimension, before having this done. You can still buy a NOS gas cyl for less than $100.

The endless debate is what colour M1 Rifles were originally. Grey or black. The answer is, it depends on when the rifle was made. Then there's the debate about the SS supposedly used in gas cylinders not taking parkerizing. Mine took it with no fuss. Hasn't shown any wear in over 30 years either.

Over the past couple of yrs I have bought 6-8 of them from everybody's favourite, Constantine in Greece, for around $65 each. There are also several ebay vendors in Italy who have them for sale.
