Your picture isn't the gas cylinder splines. It's the threads for the gas cylinder lock. Don't mess with them. The 'notch' under the sight is a gas cylinder spline.
I'm happy it worked out for you in the end. I also feel it is a good idea to remove the cylinder and have a look. Avoid doing it too often as this is how you wind up with a loose Cylinder/front sight.
