No pics. Friend asked me to check here. Question is this....his newly acquired garand does not have any makers name or serial number in the usual place. Any ideas? Only number on rifle is on the bolt and he does not think it looks like a serial number. Tks., Dave

Markings have been removed from a genuine receiver? Any indication of grinding or sanding? The number on the bolt, if neatly stamped is a drawing number, not a serial. If it is electropenciled, it is a serial, likely applied in Europe.
An aftermarket receiver?

Is the action on a semi-auto Garand called a "bolt"? Curious....

I would guess it is a rifle assembled from surplus parts on a commercial receiver, probably by Federal Ordnance or Interarms in the USA.

"...by Federal Ordnance or Interarms..." Or (shudder) Century Arms.
"...Is the action on a semi-auto Garand called a "bolt"?..." No, but the bolt itself is.

Thanks guys...I'll contact the owner again. He said the place where the serial number and the makers name is blank and has not been filed off. He has a Springfield to compare it to. Dave

You sure you are both talking Garands and not M14's.......?
