New to sight. Has anyone that has an M1 Garand noticed the front sight, or gas tube, become loose making hitting the target tricky. Can only be tighten so much and still has movement. Have been on the internet and found out different things to do, but was looking for someone that has actually cured the problem and is happy with the result. Thanks for any comments and help.

Hmmmm If we were closer (whereabouts are you?) I could help you out. This is not a super hard problem, I just have to get a closer look at it....

Is it the gas tube or the front sight that moves? Can you wiggle the gas tube by hand? A loose gas tube might be the the splines on the barrel. The splines can be peened a bit for a better fit.
Like Hungry says, where you are matters.

Thanks to all the advice. I went ahead and peen the end of the barrel where the gas tube slides into the groves. That worked. Thanks again and it's good to know that help is not too far away.

How do you peen the splines on the barrel?

Support the splined area of the barrel on a wooden block and use a 1/8" flat face punch.
Normally all you need do to tighten up the gas cyl is to peen the edges of the spline on the top of the barrel (12 O'clock position). Take a ballpien hammer and tap the punch lightly along the edge of the spline cuts just enough to deform/break the edge. Trial fit the gas cyl to check for looseness. Repeat as necessary to achieve tightness. Do not beat the hell out of it.
